PU results: Girls Outshine Boys Again; Dakshina Kannada Dist Tops

Bangalore: The results of the second-year Pre-University examination held in March 2008 are out. The not-so-cheering news is that there is a dip of nearly 9% compared with the previous year (50.7%). The overall pass percentage this year is 41.31, with 2,36,364 clearing the exam.

In all, 5,72,197 candidates appeared for the exam conducted in 774 centres across the state from March 17 to 29. A total of 12,692 examiners have valued the answerscripts.

Again, this year, girls (48.65%) have fared better than boys (35.45%). The overall pass percentage of freshers is 47.74 while private and repeaters is 24.42 and 20.27.

Among the districts, Dakshina Kannada topped with 76.72% followed by Udupi 76.2% and Kodagu 60.63%. Bangalore North, which stood seventh, scored 50.86% while Bangalore South (8th) got 50.35%. The least pass percentage was recorded in Bidar with 16.57%.

This year, there is a slight variation in the results in urban and rural category. The rural students are almost on a par with their urban counterparts. The pass percentage in urban is 41.28, while in rural it is 41.04.

A look at the statistics in the past 10 years shows the lowest pass percentage was 35.02 in April 1998. Till 2001, there was a fluctuation in the results. After 2001, there has been a marginal increase almost every year up to 2006 (53.97%), considered an all-time high. But in 2007, it dipped to 50.7%.

SSLC results on May 5

The results of SSLC examination held in March-April 2008 will be announced on May 5. On May 4 evening, the results would be posted on the website, said KSEEB director D S Rajanna.

Why low pass percentage?

Candidates who wrote II PU exams are first batch of students who wrote SSLC exam of new pattern In SSLC, 60 marks allotted for Multiple Choice Questions Experts feel this could have reduced students' writing skills Also, a majority are declared pass in I PU So they can't cope with II PU, a tougher exam

Distinction and toppers

In the general category, highest marks secured in arts is 564; in commerce, 585; and science, 586 In SC category, highest marks secured in Arts is 549; commerce 567 and science 580 In ST category, highest marks secured in arts is 530, commerce 547 and science 568 Number of students who have got distinction (85% and above) is 6,372; first class 98,900; second class 69,855 and pass class 61,237

PU Dept Plans Slew Of Measures To Improve Results Next Year

Bangalore: The Pre-university department is taking various measures to improve results from next year. To start with, students entering I PU will be given remedial coaching. "This is for students who are weak in a few subjects. Extra classes for two hours will be taken for them," said PU commissioner S G Hegde. These students will be identified in the beginning of the academic year, in June.

Another initiative is introduction of a bridge course. "There is a huge knowledge gap among students coming from SSLC to PUC. To fill this, the bridge course will be introduced," he said. Both these courses are compulsory, he added.

He said I PU students would be informed about required attendance at the beginning of the year itself, and asked them to "take the I PU course seriously".

The PU commissioner said the low pass percentage in II PU would not affect CET results.

For students found eligible for CET after clearing supplementary exams, he said: "The supplementary exams will be held in June and the results are likely to be announced in July. By then, the first round of CET counselling will have commenced. However, we are looking at it."

Essay-type answers the culprit?

The lowest II PU pass percentage in a decade has turned the probe scanner on the students’ ability to write essay-type answers. This, experts said, was the chief reason for shaving off the results percentage by a shocking degree.

PU commissioner S G Hegde was blunt: "I am not happy. There is a need to analyze the results. It could be because the candidates who wrote the II PU exams happen to be the first batch of students who wrote the SSLC exam of the new pattern. In this, 60 marks were allotted for multiple-choice questions. Experts feel this has reduced writing skills among students. This is possible if you see the low pass percentage in arts, as arts subjects require more writing," he explained.

Also, students do not take I PU seriously, though the second PU syllabus is the extension of the I PU syllabus. As a result, they can’t cope with II PU. A majority are declared passed in I PU, he said, adding that the department will look into the matter seriously.
