A countrywide increase of 0.27 pass percentage points from 80.64 last year
Pass percentage for the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas highest
CBSE to award 4,548 merit certificates this year
NEW DELHI: With an outstanding 91.75 overall pass percentage, the Chennai region has bagged the top position across the country in the Central Board of Secondary Education’s class XII examinations.
Results for the Delhi, the Guwahati and the Allahabad regions were declared on Friday, while those of Ajmer, Chennai and Panchkula were announced on Wednesday.
The Ajmer region is next with a pass percentage of 86. 33. Delhi has bagged the third position, one up from the fourth it held last year, with a pass percentage of 83.69 followed by Panchkula, Allahabad and Guwahati.
There has been an increase of 0.27 pass percentage points from 80.64 last year to 80.91 in 2008, with girls once again outshining boys in all the six regions. “Girls have done better than boys. The pass percentage for girls is 85.44 compared with 77.59 of the boys.
The pass percentage for regular students is 83.11, while it is 37.77 for private candidates,” said CBSE chairperson Ashok Ganguly on Friday.
In all, 549,344 candidates registered for the examinations this year.
Based on the National Curriculum Framework-2005, the CBSE had redesigned the question papers in all the major subjects for Classes XII and X for the 2008 examinations to assess Higher Order Thinking Skills in students by focussing on evaluating their abilities to reason and analyse.
“This year, we changed the typology of questions. The average performance of the students has increased because of this change which is very satisfying. Those students in the 40-50 per cent bracket have shifted to the 50-60 per cent bracket and those in the 50-60 per cent bracket have moved to the 60-70 per cent category,” pointed out Mr. Ganguly.
The pass percentage for candidates from the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas was the highest among all the other institutions standing at 92.44 per cent compared with 90.11 per cent in 2007.
Kendriya Vidyalayas that had registered an overall pass percentage of 93.14 last year dipped this year to 91 per cent. The Central Tibetans are in the third position with a pass percentage of 85.81.
The government and government-aided schools have bettered their record with pass percentages of 81.96 and 78.61 respectively. It stood at 78.59 and 75.93 per cent respectively in 2007.
Foreign schools have secured a pass percentage of 92.15, though it has come down from 92.96 per cent in 2007.
Also, the number of girls securing 60 per cent or more has been increasing with each passing year. This year, 88,183 girls have achieved this score.
“Students from Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes have performed very well. The pass percentage of SC candidates has risen from 78.20 per cent last year to 81.44 per cent in 2008. The result of ST students has been good too registering 66.04 per cent compared with last year’s 60.17 per cent,” said Mr. Ganguly.
As many as 844 students appeared for class XII examinations in the disabled category, achieving a pass percentage of 86.46. Five differently-abled students have scored above 90 per cent.
The CBSE will award 4,548 merit certificates this year, the maximum going to the Allahabad region (1067), followed by Delhi (969) and Chennai (936).
The number of students who secured more than 90 per cent in Class XII is 8,252 this year including 4,190 girls. As many as 384 candidates (193 girls and 191 boys) attained more than 95 per cent. However, this number has gone down from 514 last year.

Bangalore finally gets a new airport
The seventeen-year-old wait by Bangaloreans finally ended on Friday night - The swanky new Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) at Devanahalli became operational when the Indian carrier IC 609 from Mumbai made a touch down at 22:37 pm.
"It is a proud moment for Bangalore and Karnataka", exclaimed Infosys employee Sheela Shenoy, the first air passenger to set her foot on the airport, the first phase of which has been constructed at a cost of Rs 2,470 crore.
Her fellow passengers, who disembarked from the Indian aircraft, too were all enthused about the new facility that has been added to Bangalore. But what left a majority of the passengers perplexed was the absence of any gala celebrations. An elderly passenger who was greeted by flowers by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) CEO Albert Brunner and other officials on his arrival quipped: "This new airport has created a record of sorts in the country as it has been opened for civil operations minus extravaganza and politicians."
Not just the arriving passengers, even the flight crew sported a smile on their faces as they walked out of the new airport. The captain of IC 609 Sunil Vasisht could not hide his excitement. "It is a world-class airport, the air traffic control system was very clear. Professionals are running the ATC and we did not face any problems in landing here. In fact, the landing has been a wonderful experience," Vasisht said.
Though the arrival side of the terminal building was full of mirth, the departure lounge saw a few anxious moments as the passengers had to wait till midnight for take-off. The first flight to take off was a Singapore-bound Indian carrier at 00:01 hours with 144 passengers on-board.
The relatives and well-wishers of the outbound passengers were all praise for the airport. The glitzy terminal building and the well-lit road leading to it gave many an experience of a having landed in a foreign locale. "After descending the Hebbal flyover, it was a fast drive to the airport. Unlike the HAL airport which is congested, this airport is a different experience," said Snehalatha Ravi, who had come to drop her software professional-son at the airport.
Many passengers, though impressed with the facility, were a bit irked on the first day as the check-in counters were to too slow. A R Venkatachalam, an HP executive on his way to Singapore, commented: "If we were not made to wait this long, it would have been a really nice experience." A few other software professionals, especially those working at Whitefield and Electronic City, complained that faster connectivity was still a problem area. They said the existing HAL airport should be allowed to operate flights on short-haul routes.
