Obama to deliver speech on Iraq ahead of trip

By Caren Bohan

CHICAGO, July 14 (Reuters) - White House hopeful Barack Obama will outline his views on Iraq and U.S. national security in a speech Tuesday before a planned trip there, his campaign said.

"He will focus on the global strategic interests of the United States, which includes ending our misguided effort in Iraq," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement.

The speech in Washington comes as his Republican rival in the November presidential election, John McCain, has been accusing Obama of changing his position on Iraq.

Obama is expected to travel to Iraq and Afghanistan in the coming weeks but no dates have been disclosed for his trip because of security concerns.

The McCain campaign took aim at Obama for choosing to deliver the speech before his visit to Iraq and said it suggested the Democratic candidate "will never change course on Iraq, no matter the facts on the ground."

"If he has no intention of listening to what American commanders in Iraq have to say, or incorporating that information into his policy, why is he even going?" Michael Goldfarb, a spokesman for McCain, wrote in a campaign blog.

McCain has criticized Obama for not visiting Iraq since 2006.

Obama, who based his drive to capture the Democratic nomination on his early and ardent opposition to the war, said this month he might refine his plan to bring combat troops home within 16 months of taking office if conditions on the ground changed.

McCain, a Vietnam War hero and an Arizona senator, has attacked Obama, a first-time Illinois senator, as too inexperienced to serve as U.S. commander in chief.

In an opinion piece in The New York Times on Monday, Obama reiterated the 16-month timetable for pulling out U.S. combat troops.

"We can safely redeploy our combat brigades at a pace that would remove them in 16 months," Obama said. "That would be the summer of 2010 -- two years from now, and more than seven years after the war began."

"In carrying out this strategy, we would inevitably need to make tactical adjustments," the Democratic candidate said, adding that he would consult with U.S. commanders on the ground to make sure the withdrawal proceeds safely and that U.S. interests are protected.

Obama also welcomed Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's call to include a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops in an agreement under discussion that would set the terms for the American military presence in Iraq. (Editing by Doina Chiacu)

World Youth Day 2008

Pope Benedict XVI will meet thousands of young Catholics from all over the world in Sydney

Billed as the largest youth event in the world, World Youth Day’08 is a five-day long international Catholic youth rally, where young people gather to meet Pope Benedict XVI. It begins in Sydney, Australia on Tuesday July 15 and ends with a Mass said by Benedict XVI on Sunday July 20. The Pope arrived on Sunday, July 13.

Around half a million young people are expected to attend the closing Mass, while around half that number are expected in the days before the Mass.

To date, there have been ten World Youth Days since the initiative was begun in 1986 by Pope John Paul II. He invited young Catholics to meet with him on a regular basis, approximately once every two years, for a gathering of worship, prayer, talks, Mass and teaching. Each WYD is centred on a Bible passage. The passage for WYD 2008 is "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses" (Acts 1, 8).

The largest WYD to date took place in Manila, the Philippines, in 1995 and was attended by 4 million young people. Nearly half a million are expected to attend the closing Mass at WYD08 on July 20, 2008.

WYD08 has attracted criticism over the cost of the event, paid out of the public purse although the major expenses will be paid by the Catholic Church, and also from protesters who plan to highlight their opposition to Roman Catholic teaching on sex, and contraception by handing out condoms to pilgrims. They also object to a new law introduced in New South Wales, banning protesters from “annoying” World Youth Day pilgrims.

Leighton Meester is Summertime Sexy

Now that we’re well into July, the summer heat is in full force. And Leighton Meester was spotted sweating it out in New York City over the weekend.

Saturday afternoon, the Gossip Girl gal was out and about in Manhattan, looking beautiful, albeit a bit on the toasty side, in a belted summery dress teamed with a pair of aviator sunglasses and leather strappy sandals.

On the previous day, Miss Meester saw fit to take her pooch for a walk, only to find out that the furry friend had a little business of its own to attend to. Never fear, like a responsible dog owner, Leighton picked up the poo and carried on.

And the Lucky magazine cover girl will be hitting the airwaves in September with an all-new season of Gossip Girl on the CW!

Amy Winehouse Turns Over New Leaf

Gone are the days of showing up hours late to gigs and stumbling through set lists incoherently! Amy Winehouse spent the weekend redeeming herself as one of the UK’s top female performers.

The “Rehab” singer delighted fans at Ireland’s Oxygen festival by showing up just a few minutes past her scheduled stage time before nailing her entire performance. She even dedicated “Wake Up Alone” to her incarcerated hubby Blake Fielder-Civil.

Amy told the audience, “This one’s for Blakey. He’s out in nine days.” Perhaps the fact that she’ll be reunited with her husband has brought new life into the troubled singer.

The next day, Winehouse showed up as scheduled at Scotland’s T in the Park festival, once again delivering a grade-A performance. She also reaffirmed that her man was coming home soon before finishing off her 14-song set with a rousing rendition of “Valerie.”

Jordan to adopt

Is Jordan trying to copy Angelina Jolie?

Our favourite glamour model, real name Katie Price, says she wants to adopt a child from a orphanage in Bulgaria.

Katie says she decided to make the move after watching a TV documentary about their plight.

The former I'm A Celebrity contestant already has three kids Harvey, who is partially blind and autistic, Junior, three, and Princess Tiaamii, one.

She told The Sun: "We want to be able to help a child to have a better life.

"The programme moved me to tears. So many babies who are born with disabilities find it hard to find adoptive parents - no one wants them.

"So Pete and I have been to see a lawyer about adopting a baby from abroad."

Katie revealed the process could take up to 18 months.

A source close to her said: "She's not an emotional person, but was traumatised by what she saw. It made her determined."

Mariah Carey wanted to be kidnapped

We thought every celebrity's nightmare would be to be kidnapped with a huge ransom being demanded.

However, Mariah Carey has admitted she often fantasised about being kidnapped when she was feeling low.

She explained to Elle magazine: "When I was in an unhappy place in my life, I always wanted to be kidnapped. I just wanted a way out, but I didn't have one."

And it seems that her dream came true when new husband Nick Cannon kidnapped her and took her on a romantic jaunt.

She added: "He sort of kidnapped me and took me on a helicopter ride. Then he proposed."

Mariah quashed any rumours that their marriage is in trouble by insisting she's never been happier.

She added: "It's definitely the best place I've ever been in my life. If you really look at my life, I've never had a personal life, or if I did, it was just wearing a mask and it was not existing, you know?

"I put my career ahead of my personal life because I think I didn't know that I was deserving of both, because that was just how I always felt about myself.

"That was just my own insecurity and land in which I live."

90 Minutes Of Megan Fox Naked?

Transformers beauty Megan Fox recently revealed that she would like to star in a movie entirely naked from beginning to end. The actress, who according to reports two weeks ago broke up with her boyfriend actor Brian Austin Green, told The Daily Star, "'I would love to do a movie naked - it would be beautiful."

Her comments are sure to raise more than just an eyebrow however, because Fox said no studio would ever take the chance of making a film like that again. She elaborates: "They did it in the 1930s in an arty way."

Last week Fox's boyfriend, who starred in hit TV series Beverly Hills, 90210, refuted rumors that the pair had split, insisting that they are still together.

Miley Cyrus Caught Up In Photo Scandal Again?

Teen sensation Miley Cyrus has been caught up in yet another photo scandal after an internet hacker accessed her phone's memory and found a series of saucy snaps.

The new pictures allegedly show the singer posing seductively in the shower with only a wet t-shirt covering her modesty, as well as a photo of her showing off her stomach in a skimpy top. The snaps were reportedly downloaded from the star's personal picture phone memory by a hacker calling himself the Digital Gangster.

According to a celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, who has the controversial new photographs on his website, the hacker is shopping the snaps around to several publications in the hope of landing a big paycheck. And Digital Gangster claims to have a whole host of raunchy snaps he has found on the 15-year-old's phone.

Cyrus has been involved in several photo scandals this year, including her highly controversial Vanity Fair cover shoot in May, in which she is shown posing with a satin sheet.

Bon Jovi draws 60,000 at Central Park concert

Invoking the specter of other musical giants who have played on Central Park's Great Lawn - Simon and Garfunkel, Luciano Pavarotti, Barbra Streisand - even Jon Bon Jovi himself seemed to be "Livin' on a Prayer" with 60,000 die-hard fans gushing for him.

"Not too many people have ever done it," he said. "What a way to end up. We started 10 nights ago in New Jersey. We end up with the biggest show in New York on the Great Lawn."

Frantic concertgoers sung along to every word as the band belted songs such as their iconic "You Give Love a Bad Name ." [CORRECTION: The name of one of the songs Bon Jovi performed Saturday night in Central Park, "You Give Love a Bad Name," was incorrect in a story yesterday. (A17 ALL 7/14/2008)]

And Bon Jovi was to blame - as the fans gave their love for him a good name, holding aloft banners adorned with the band's album covers and soaking in the musical blades of glory for the estimated two-hour show.

Jacob Fleitman, 25, was the first person waiting in line for the concert, arriving at 6 p.m. Friday. "I'm a die-hard Bon Jovi fan," said Fleitman, of Roosevelt Heights. "My wife is a bigger fan. She made me wait on line."

He spent the night in the company of other eager fans, tossing around a football and playing tunes on a stereo he brought in front of the park's East 72nd Street entrance. When he was allowed in at 2 p.m., he sprinted - with his wife lagging behind - eventually making it to the center of the front row. "It's been amazing for a free concert."

The park was set up in six zones, with staff allowing 10,000 at a time to enter. An overflow zone was set far back by the lake. According to concert staffers, the first quad filled up with 10,000 concertgoers in over an hour.

Other fans fared just as well without having to camp out the night before. Corey Brill, 19, an NYU student from Plainview and his friend Zach Shor, 20, of Manhattan, arrived to the concert line at 4 p.m. and made their way to the front row in a matter of seconds. "We just squeezed in," said Brill.

"I'm a pretty big Bon Jovi fan," said Kyle Atkinson, of Jamaica, Queens, who won his tickets through an online competition and waited in line with his girlfriend.

The concert, which began at 8 p.m., was a gift to the city from the Grammy-winning band and a prelude to the July 15 All-Star baseball game at Yankee Stadium.

Anne Marie Mannente, 43, a teacher's aide from Bon Jovi's hometown of Sayreville, N.J., said she's been attending the band's concerts since the early 1980s.

"He's always fun," she said. "Outdoors, he's even better. And they put on a good show."

Crystal Lopez, 22, an executive assistant from Stamford, Conn., who won her tickets through a radio call-in contest on "Z-100," waited more than an hour to enter the park. "Everyone here is making it so much better," she said.
