The 2008 UEFA European Football Championship, commonly referred to as Euro 2008, is the 13th edition of the UEFA European Football Championship, a quadrennial football tournament for European nations. The tournament, which is being hosted by Austria and Switzerland, began on 7 June 2008 and is scheduled to conclude with the final at Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna on 29 June 2008. It is the second successful joint bid in the competition's history, following the UEFA Euro 2000 hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands. The 2012 competition in Poland and Ukraine is scheduled to become the third jointly-hosted tournament.
A total of 16 teams are participating in the tournament. Austria and Switzerland automatically qualified as hosts; the remaining 14 teams were determined through qualifying matches which began in August 2006. Austria and Poland have both made their first appearance in the tournament. The winner of Euro 2008 will represent UEFA at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa, unless Italy wins the tournament, in which case the runner-up will be entered, as Italy is already entered as the winner of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Chidambaram for higher tax collection
Asks CBDT to work on a substantial upward revision in the target
NEW DELHI: Enthused by a 36.6 per cent increase in net direct tax collections in 2007-08, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Monday directed the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to work on a substantial upward revision in the mop-up target as estimated in the budget for the current fiscal.
Briefing newspersons after inaugurating a two-day annual conference of the Chief Commissioners of Income Tax here, Mr. Chidambaram said the budget estimate for revenue collection through direct taxes in 2008-09 could be increased substantially from Rs 3,65,000 crore to over Rs. 3,92,000 crore.
“The estimate will no longer be Rs. 3,65,000 crore. The CBDT will meet over the next couple of days and increase the estimate upwards…Even if you take a 25 per cent increase over the last year collection of over Rs. 3,14,468 crore, the budget estimates must be revised upward very sharply,” he said.
A 25 per cent growth over last year’s collection would raise the direct tax collection estimate to over Rs. 3,92,000 crore, he noted.
To a query on his optimism on the tax collection front, despite inflationary pressures and consequent fear of a slowdown in economic growth, he said: “every estimate says that economy will still grow at 8.5 per cent this fiscal.”
Referring to non-compliance of rules pertaining to tax deduction at source (TDS) by some Ministries, he said: “We are not happy with TDS in the Defence and Railways Ministries. We are taking steps to sensitise the authorised deductors in the government sector to comply with law and improve the TDS.”
He noted that there would be a marked improvement during the current fiscal as steps were being taken to work with the Ministries on this front.
On tax evasion, he pointed out that henceforth, during a search or survey, if a person is found to have stopped filing returns for the past three years or had never filed a return, “invariably such a case will be taken up for prosecution”. Directions have been issued in this regard.
On the 360-degree profiling of tax evaders announced last year, he said that information from all sources – from the Customs and Income-Tax Departments, the CBI and through successful searches – was being used to prepare profiles of known tax violators.
As for the proposed Income Tax Code, which is to replace the Income Tax Act, he said the code was ready. “[The] Discussion Paper is being written.”
Hailing the I-T Department for a record mop-up in taxes, Mr. Chidambaram said that during the UPA government’s four-year rule, the collections tripled from Rs. 1,05,088 crore in 2003-04. Alongside, the cost of tax collection also declined to 0.54 per cent, the lowest in any jurisdiction in the world. This performance would fetch the department a bonus of about Rs. 400 crore. The government was stressing on voluntary tax compliance and the fact that it was paying off reflected in the increase in TDS (51 per cent), advance taxes (33.6 per cent) and self-assessment tax (62 per cent) last fiscal.

Yahoo compares its new service to Tata Nano
Yahoo India head of audience Gopal Krishna has said the new local area information service the company launched on Tuesday is like Tata Motors' small car Nano: "It will be well received by users because it satisfies the users' needs comprehensively."
Called the Yahoo Local Beta, the new service will have to compete with a slew of local area information providers on the Internet. But Krishna is unfazed.
“Although the automobile industry is over a hundred years old, the Nano is the most talked about car because of its mass appeal. Local Beta aims to serve its users in a similar manner,” he told IANS.
Yahoo Local Beta combines the informative capabilities of Yellow Pages and the interactive capabilities of Yahoo maps.
“If you need to access details of a restaurant or a convenience store or a gym in your locality, you can search for the same on the Local Beta site,” Krishna said at a press conference here earlier.
“We have a comprehensive database of locality-based businesses which is expanding everyday by user contribution," he added. "It is possible for the user to rate, review, add information and leave a footprint.”
The site also offers the driving direction to any of the listed businesses for its users. “Yahoo maps offers best driving directions in the country and we have integrated that with the Local Beta,” said Yahoo India's local and maps division business head Srishar Ranganathan.
Krishna said the company has sourced part of its listed information from Indiacom Yellow Pages while some of it has been researched internally.
“As of now, its too early to comment on how much user generated content we have on the site, but certainly that is going to be the driver and we are hoping that user contributed information will for a chunk of the sites content,” he added.
Yahoo Inc. has more than 500 million users worldwide and is the leading email provider in India. “Our parent company is especially keen about the India market and we have taken the initiative to launch various new services here in the last six months,” Krishna said.
Indimail, Indichat (chat in nine Indian languages) and Glue are some of the services that Yahoo has launched recently.

Community band starting tunes up for free concerts in park
Who: Austin Community Band.
What: First free concert of the season.
Where: Community Bandshell Park, South Main Street and Ninth Place Southwest.
When: 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Forty local musicians will come together Wednesday to offer the first of several free, weekly concerts at Austin's Community Bandshell Park.
Under the direction of Brian Koser, the Austin Community Band is set to perform at 7 p.m. in the band shell as part of its 2008 Summer Concerts in the Park season. The ensemble consists of local musicians who have been rehearsing since April in preparation of their annual June concert series.
Running through July 3, the Wednesday night concerts last about an hour and are free to the public. People are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs.
The traditional "civic band" instrumentation includes musicians of all ages -- high school to retirees -- with a mix of woodwinds, brass and percussion players playing marches, ragtime tunes, classic overtures and musical numbers from popular Broadway shows.
Every concert will feature a different lineup. About 55 pieces compositions have been chosen and prepared to represent almost every style, organizers say.
"The musicians are not only awesome players," Koser says, "their commitment to the tradition of keeping the community band a thriving ensemble in our city is a tribute to their excellence."
Austin's community band, the release says, has managed to survive the "test of time when many others have fallen by the wayside."
The band's fourth concert, on July 2, will feature music of the jazz and big-band era, with jazz musicians from the community.
Community band members also will perform July 3 to usher in the Freedom Fest's fireworks display and will make an appearance July 4 for the Independence Day parade.

CBSE to increase one mark questions
New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is considering increasing the number of One-Mark Questions from 10 to 15 in the Class 10 & 12 Board examinations from next year.
This move is expected to take shape in the 2008-2009 academic session.
Mr. Ashok Ganguly, Chairman of CBSE said, "The decision to add the number of questions in one marker's will only be implemented after assessing the nature of the question paper, results and the feedback from various academic institutions."
Ms. Rashmi Saxena, a physics teacher said that, "CBSE added the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in questions, which were divided into two parts. In such questions, students needed to apply the 'theme' (or application) than writing laws or formulae."
Mr. Ganguly added that, "The most important feature of HOTS is that it contains 'something' or the other for every student appearing for the examination. HOTS is one paper which does not require students to mug up the chapters. This year, an average student scored good marks in the examination because of these HOTS questions."
This year, all HOTS questions were included in one-mark questions only.
Out of total number of questions, 20 percent of questions were based on HOTS, making it a 30 percent change in the exam model.

Vodafone and Airtel to Bring iPhone to India
No sooner has Steve Jobs unleashed the new 3G iPhone at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco than back home, not one but two carriers — Bharti Airtel and Vodafone — have announced, in conjunction with Apple, that they will be bringing the iconic device to India later this year. However, neither has specified the launch date or pricing of the 3G iPhone in India.
And now that the wraps are finally off of the much-hyped 3G iPhone, a quick recap of the stuff it’s made of. iPhone II marries all of the features of iPhone with 3G networking to make the device “twice as fast” as the first-generation iPhone. iPhone II features built-in GPS for expanded location-based mobile services and iPhone 2.0 software with support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, and is capable of running hundreds of third-party applications already built with the recently-released iPhone SDK.
Vodafone and Apple will bring iPhone 3G first to Australia, Italy, New Zealand, and Portugal on July 11. In these markets, Vodafone will make available iPhone 3G on both prepaid and contract price plans that will include value data bundles. Vodafone will then, later this year, make iPhone 3G available in other markets including the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, South Africa, Turkey, and most importantly — India. Details of specific launch dates and price plans will be made available in the respective countries by individual Vodafone operating companies. Vodafone customers in all of these markets including India can pre-register online and in retail stores in the next few days.
Meanwhile, Airtel customers who wish to receive more information on the Apple iPhone can send an SMS with keyword “iPhone” to 54321 (toll-free number). Airtel will announce details regarding pricing and availability at a later date, the company said.
Announcing the Apple-Vodafone partnership, Frank H R Vekamp, global CMO of Vodafone Group, said, “We are very excited to bring iPhone 3G to many of our customers across Europe and emerging markets this summer. Vodafone’s extensive, high-speed, and reliable networks mean customers can enjoy a great Internet and communications experience on their iPhone 3G.”
On a similar note, Manoj Kohli, president and chief executive officer of Bharti Airtel, said, “We are delighted with the opportunity to bring the innovative iPhone 3G to India. As India’s leading telecom operator, Bharti Airtel has always stood for innovation and customer delight. With our reach across the country and iPhone’s revolutionary features, we have a valuable proposition for our customers in India.”
Meanwhile, Tim Cook, chief operating officer of Apple said in separate announcements that they are thrilled to work with both Vodafone and Bharti Airtel and can’t wait to get this revolutionary product in the hands of even more people around the world.
Techtree had previously reported about the possibility of Apple going multi-carrier in India. Now that it’s indeed official, we asked some people for their views on the same. “Vodaphone has an international tie-up with Apple for the iPhone in a lot of countries, so it is little wonder that they got roped in for India as well. This seems to be purely from a goodwill point of view. Bharti Airtel on the other hand has a huge reach in India, and they’ve been roped in as well by Apple. This is purely from the business point of view,” said a hard-core techie we know. A Vodafone customer said, “I’m rather more interested in knowing when they are launching the iPhone in India and what will it cost”. Meanwhile, an Airtel subscriber had this to say, “I’d like to see attractive schemes like special tariffs on voice-GPRS services along with better network services and support.”
All said, both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone are established names in telecom; Bharti Airtel is known as India’s leading integrated telecom services provider while Vodafone is known as the world’s leading international mobile communications group. It will be interesting to see how the carriers’ respective associations with Apple play out, to say the least.
