Priyanka goes red for Love Story 2050

Priyanka Chopra is so dedicated to her profession, that it can actually give others a complex. Recently, Priyanka proved her commitment during the shooting for Love Story 2050. The story required her to sport red hair. And guess what! Priyanka actually went ahead and dyed her hair red instead of opting for the easy way out—wearing a wig.

The 'hands and brains' at work behind the look included ace make-up artist Mickey Contractor, director Harry Baweja and celebrated hairstylist Thea, who spent six months finalising the right look. Baweja said the situation called for Priyanka to look like someone from the future, though not an alien. And he was very touched with Priyanka’s dedication—she changed her hair colour thrice: first to red, then black and then back to red.

Hip fat is 'good', pot bellies are 'bad'

New York (PTI): Not all body flab is harmful -- hip fat is good but pot bellies are bad, claims a new study. Previous studies have revealed that subcutaneous fat is merely the lesser of the two evils. Now, researchers in the United States have concluded that it could actually be positively beneficial.

A team at the Joslin Diabetes Centre in Boston has found that the worst kind is actually the excess fat on the internal organs, which causes a pot belly and is known as visceral fat.

According to them, people with visceral fat are more likely to suffer from heart disease and insulin resistance, which leads to type II diabetes, than those who put on fat under their skin on their hips and thighs.

In their study, the researchers, led by C. Ronald Kahn, transplanted subcutaneous fat into the bodies of some mice and visceral fat into others. They found the laboratory mice that had received subcutaneous fat ended up with lighter, leaner bodies and less insulin resistance than the animals that got visceral fat and, crucially, those that received no fat transplant at all.

"That increased body fat has a favourable effect is something I buy into," the 'New Scientist' quoted John Miles of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester as saying. If subcutaneous fat also has benefits in humans, the results could explain why liposuction, which removes this fat, does not reduce diabetes or other side effects of obesity, according to the researchers.

How subcutaneous fat exerts its positive influence remains a mystery, but Kahn suspects it secretes hormones that speed up metabolism.

Country loving Jenna Bush marries at her family's ranch

The happy couple, who met during President Bush' presidential campaign in 2004, will tie the knot infront of 200 guests just before sunset on Saturday evening.

While Britain prepares for a royal wedding next week, America is celebrating its own high profile nuptials this weekend as Jenna Bush prepares to tie the knot with Henry Hager on Saturday.

More than 200 friends and relations have descended on the small Texan town of Crawford to see President George Bush's daughter marry on the family's 1,6000-acre Prairie Chapel Ranch.

The ceremony, which will begin in the evening at 7.30, will take place next to a private fishing lake. The bride has already revealed to a US magazine that she will walk up the aisle in an embroidered organza Oscar De La Renta gown.

On Friday, the bride-to-be was joined by her mum, First Lady Laura Bush, maid-of-honour, twin sister Barbara, and some of the guests for a bridal lunch, ahead of the traditional rehearsal dinner that evening.

Although they did consider a White House event, Henry and Jenna, who became engaged during a hiking trip, instead opted for a more informal affair at the ranch.

"Henry and I are far less glamorous than the White House," the pretty 26-year-old said. "It means a lot to me and Henry to be outdoors. We wanted something organic and low-key."

The excitement throughout Crawford is certainly evident. Visitors can find a variety of memorabilia including magnets, teddy bears and mugs made to commemorate the event.

Vodafone set to offer Apple's iPhone in India

NEW DELHI: Gizmo freaks have reason to celebrate with Vodafone set to offer the Apple iPhone to its subscribers in India before 2008-end. The iPhone was first launched a year ago in the US with AT&T as an exclusive carrier. Its inaugural price was Rs 15,960 for 8GB and Rs 19,960 for 16GB with a two-year service agreement.

When contacted, Vodafone refused to divulge any further details regarding the date of launch, the model or the price. However, a company official promised that the price would be "competitive".

Vodafone will have to come up with a specific scheme in India to upgrade its existing customers to the iPhone as it is very likely that a vast majority of customers here will be from their existing prepaid customers spread across their 16 existing and 6 new circles.

It remains to be seen whether Vodafone will offer a return policy for these iPhones. In the US, AT&T offers a 14-day return policy provided the phone is returned at the original point of purchase.

Later this year, Vodafone customers in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey will also be able to purchase the iPhone for use on the Vodafone network. Vodafone, the world's largest mobile phone company by revenue, has been competing with operators and retailers to sell the iPhone, which is presently only available in the US, Britain, France, Germany, Ireland and Austria.

Usually, Apple signs a multi-year exclusive partnership where iPhone is only available with the wireless service from one carrier in one country.

In US, visual voice mail was the first example of a unique collaboration between AT&T and Apple. In India many such new innovations can be expected. The innovation between Apple and Vodafone could lead not only to new capabilities in the device but also to the network itself.

In US, the iPhone allows data access such as email, Google mail, You Tube, per connectivity with the 3G or EDGE network or from a local Wi-Fi connection.

The iPhone represents a whole new experience in mobile phone and internet usage to access broadband wireless. While in India, iPhones are purchased from the grey market or carried back from overseas visits, easy availability through Vodafone is bound to be very welcome.

The iPhone combines three amazing products a mobile phone, a wide screen iPod and a breakthrough internet device into one small, lightweight, hand-held device with the best e-mail ever on a mobile phone. It allows for full screen web browsing, multi touch screen and applications such as Google maps. The latest software update can now allow you to customize up to 9 home screen pages anyway you like.

Vodafone cuts STD, roaming rates

Vodafone Essar, on Tuesday announced reduced STD and roaming rates for all customers across India, effective May 6. Its new tariffs are lower than Bharti Airtel, which had announced similar tariff cuts only last week.

It is highly likely that other operators, especially Idea, will follow the suit taken by the two leading operators.

STD calls have been slashed to Rs 1.30/min to any destination within India, while roaming rates have been reduced to Re 1/min for all incoming and local outgoing calls. STD calls on roaming will be charged at Rs 1.50/min.

Happy Mother’s Day

TODAY is Mother’s Day. It is that special day of the year when we pay tribute to billions of women worldwide who, in bringing forth new life, risked their own; courageous women who have, within their powers, shielded us from harm in our young and carefree years. They are the women who instilled values that have helped shape our positive attitudes toward life, and by which many of us live today; women who in traditional communities, still sacrifice potential careers to care for their children and their households; and women in modern community settings who perform the triple role of breadwinners, managers of their households, and their children’s first mentors about life and morals.

The earliest celebration of Mother’s Day dates back to the annual spring festival which the ancient Greeks dedicated to Rhea, the mother of many deities, and to the offerings ancient Romans made to Cybele, their Great Mother of Gods. Early Christians celebrated a Mother’s Day of sorts during a festival held on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of Mary, the mother of Christ. But the modern-day idea of Mother’s Day started in 1905, when Anna Jarvis campaigned and lobbied the officials of that time to designate a day to memorialize the life work of all mothers. However, it was not until May 8, 1914, that her efforts paid off when President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day – a tradition carried on to this day.

Immeasurable is the love and care that mothers give. Their influence in our life transcends our childhood and puberty years. Our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, recognized this. It is no wonder why Filipinos regard their mothers fondly as the "ilaw ng tahanan" (light of the home), because of the wisdom, values, and moral guidance they provide to their children.

As we observe Mother’s Day today, let us accord our mothers time off from house work, bring them to a movie or a restaurant, buy them something they have always wanted and needed but had to put off buying in favor of our needs. In whatever manner we choose to convey our greetings to our mothers today, let us not forget to give them the warmest hug – which is still the best way to make them feel how much they are loved and appreciated.

Happy Mother’s Day to all Moms!
