night Riders back to winning ways

Rain-affected game goes to the wire; Royal Challengers suffers another defeat.

Kolkata: It was so close yet so far for the Royal Challengers Bangalore against Kolkata Knight Riders in the DLF Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament at the Eden Gardens. In the end, the Rahul Dravid-led Challengers lost by five runs in a rain-reduced game here giving a new lease of life to Sourav Ganguly-captained Knight Riders.

Set a victory target of 130 to get in 16 overs, Royal Challengers took up the task in right earnest and almost made it. Needing to score 19 runs off the last over bowled by Ishant Sharma, the Bangalore outfit, helped by a superb unbeaten half century by Mark Boucher, could score only 13 runs.

Fielding gave the home side the edge. A splendid three-over spell by Ganguly for a miserly seven runs in the middle overs also put the brakes on the Royal Challengers’ run chase. Amidst mounting tension, Boucher (50, 40b, 5x4, 1x6) and Cameron White (30, 16b, 3x4, 1x6) added an invaluable 45 runs for the fourth wicket and threatened to take the match away.

Lucky break

But luck was with Knight Riders as White was run out in the penultimate over bowled by Murali Kartik and thereafter, although the two unbeaten batsmen Boucher and Praveen Kumar played some bold strokes, they failed to take the team home.

Only J. Arunkumar, one of the four changes in the side, got into double figures (22, 17b, 5x4). The failure of Shivnarine Chanderpaul (7) and Rahul Dravid (5) did not help the team’s cause.

Tough task

The loss, sixth in eight matches, has made the task of reaching the semifinals rather difficult for Royal Challengers. Dravid said after the match that his team would “have to win all the remaining matches to stay in the competition.”

The win propelled Knight Riders to fifth position in the league table with three wins and four defeats to be on six points. Man of the Match Ganguly credited the team’s victory to keen fielding. “This victory will give us back the momentum to go further in this tournament,” he said.

The scores: Kolkata Knight Riders: A. Chopra lbw b Steyn 2, B. Hodge c V. Kumar b Khan 10, S. Ganguly (run out) 20, D. Hussey (run out) 26, T. Taibu c Boucher b Steyn 15, L.R. Shukla b Steyn 11, W. Fall of wickets: 1-9, 2-20, 3-46, 4-64, 5-80, 6-88, 7-122.

Royal Challengers Bangalore bowling: Steyn 4-0-27-3, Zaheer 3-0-27-1, P. Kumar 3-0-36-1, V. Kumar 3-0-15-0, Kumble 3-0-21-0.

Mother's Day

Mother's Day is a day honoring mothers, celebrated on various days in many places around the world. It complements Father's Day, the celebration honouring fathers.

History

Different countries celebrate Mother's Day on various days of the year because the day has a number of different origins.

One school of thought claims this day emerged from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece, which kept a festival to Cybele, a great mother of Greek gods. This festival was held around the Vernal Equinox around Asia Minor and eventually in Rome itself from the Ides of March (15 March) to 18 March.

The ancient Romans also had another holiday, Matronalia, that was dedicated to Juno, though mothers were usually given gifts on this day.

In some countries Mother's Day began not as a celebration for individual mothers but rather for Christians.

Mothering Sunday in Britain and Ireland

Mothering Sunday, also called "Mothers' Day" in the United Kingdom and Ireland falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent (exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday). It is believed to have originated from the 16th century Christian practice of visiting one's mother church annually, which meant that most mothers would be reunited with their children on this day. Most historians believe that young apprentices and young women in servitude were released by their masters that weekend in order to visit their families.[1] As a result of secularization, it is now principally used to celebrate and give thanks for mothers, although it is still recognised in the historical sense by some churches, with attention paid to Mary the mother of Jesus as well as the traditional concept 'Mother Church'.

Mothering Sunday can fall at earliest on March 1st (in years when Easter Day falls on March 22nd) and at latest on April 4th (when Easter Day falls on April 25th).

Mother's Day in the United States

The United States celebrates Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May. In the United States, Mother's Day was loosely inspired by the British day and was imported by social activist Julia Ward Howe after the American Civil War. However, it was intended as a call to unite women against war. In 1870, she wrote the Mother's Day Proclamation as a call for peace and disarmament. Howe failed in her attempt to get formal recognition of a Mother's Day for Peace. Her idea was influenced by Ann Jarvis, a young Appalachian homemaker who, starting in 1858, had attempted to improve sanitation through what she called Mothers' Work Days. She organized women throughout the Civil War to work for better sanitary conditions for both sides, and in 1868 she began work to reconcile Union and Confederate neighbors.

When Jarvis died in 1907, her daughter, named Anna Jarvis, started the crusade to found a memorial day for women. The first such Mother's Day was celebrated in Grafton, West Virginia, on 10 May 1908, in the church where the elder Ann Jarvis had taught Sunday School. Originally the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church, this building is now the International Mother's Day Shrine (a National Historic Landmark). From there, the custom caught on — spreading eventually to 45 states. The holiday was declared officially by some states beginning in 1912. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national Mother's Day, as a day for American citizens to show the flag in honor of those mothers whose sons had died in war.

Nine years after the first official Mother's Day, commercialization of the U.S. holiday became so rampant that Anna Jarvis herself became a major opponent of what the holiday had become. Mother's Day continues to this day to be one of the most commercially successful U.S. occasions. According to the National Restaurant Association, Mother's Day is now the most popular day of the year to dine out at a restaurant in the United States.

For example, according to IBISWorld, a publisher of business research, Americans will spend approximately $2.6 billion on flowers, $1.53 billion on pampering gifts — like spa treatments — and another $68 million on greeting cards. Mother's Day will generate about 7.8% of the US jewelry industry's annual revenue in 2008. Americans are expected to spend close to $3.51 billion in 2008 on dining out for Mother's Day, with brunch and dinner being the most popular dining out options.

Mother's Day in various parts of the world
In most countries, Mother's Day is a new concept copied from western civilization. In many African countries, the idea of one Mother's Day has its origins in copying the British concept, although there are many festivals and events celebrating mothers within the many diverse cultures on the African continent that have been there centuries before the colonials arrived. In most of East Asia, Mother's Day is a heavily marketed and commercialized concept copied straight from Mother's Day in the USA.

Mother's Day is celebrated on different days throughout the world. Examining the trends in Google searches for the term "mother's day" shows two major blips, the smaller one on the fourth Sunday in Lent (it is also called ladies day and women's day), and the larger one on the second Sunday in May.

Note: The definition used in the following table allows "Women's day" to be treated the same as "Mother's Day".

Fergie Detailed Biography

Stacy Ann "Fergie" Ferguson (born March 27, 1975 in Whittier, California, USA), is the female vocalist for the Black Eyed Peas. Ferguson is a two-time Grammy Award winner. She joined the Black Eyed Peas in 2003, replacing Kim Hill.

Ferguson began her career in 1983 as the voice of Sally Brown in the Peanuts special It's Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown. Shortly afterwards, at the age of eight, she made her first appearance on the variety television program Kids Incorporated. During the following five years, Ferguson appeared on over 100 episodes of Kids Incorporated, some of which alongside Renee Sands, with whom she would later reunite in the band Wild Orchid.

In 1993, Ferguson graduated from Glen A. Wilson High School in Hacienda Heights, California.

In 1990 Ferguson became a member of the all-female band Wild Orchid. The group released two albums, but after completing their third album the record label declined to release it. During Wild Orchid, she was a Bongo model, and Guess model and had her own show called "The Great Pretenders", on Fox Family. She left the group shortly thereafter and, according to interviews, sought therapy. She told a Glasgow newspaper: "I started doing Ecstasy. Then I got addicted to crystal methamphetamine. My weight dropped to 90 lb (41 kg). I lied to my friends and said I was bulimic. Finally I started going crazy. In that moment I talked to God and He said: 'I've given you all these gifts, so what are you doing?' I decided to get clean. I told everybody what was wrong."

Ferguson was a dance floor regular and backup singer at various Los Angeles venues. She met will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas at one of those venues. Ferguson and will.i.am had a number of meetings after shows and, before long, she was invited to join the band in the recording studio. Ferguson replaced background singer Kim Hill, who left the group in 2000. Ferguson recorded five songs with the group before she was invited to join them permanently. She took the stage name "Fergie" and is featured prominently in the group's songs "Don't Phunk With My Heart", "Don't Lie", "Hey Mama" "Shut Up" and "My Humps".

Ferguson is embarking on a solo career, but she has said she considers it only a side project and will still continue to record and tour with the band. She has recorded the remake of the song "True" with fellow bandmate will.i.am for the soundtrack to 50 First Dates.

The latest rumor indicates that Fergie's solo album will be titled "Ferglicious" (as said by will.i.am in a recent interview).

In July 2003, she had a guest role on the Rocket Power special, Reggie's Big Beach Break, on Nickelodeon, voicing a fictitious pop music star named Shaffika.

Ferguson also has a role in the upcoming 2006 film Poseidon, a remake of the 1972 adventure movie, playing a ship entertainer named Gloria. Fergie will sing "I Won't Let You Fall," which she describes as a dramatic power ballad. She wrote the song with will.i.am and other band members.

She will also play an undercover stripper in the sixth season of the HBO drama The Sopranos.

WWE wrestling star The Great Khali gets promoted in Indian police force

CHANDIGARH, India: The Great Khali, standing 7 feet 3 inches (220 centimeters) and weighing 420 pounds (190 kilograms), has earned prizes, movie roles and piles of money for his prowess on the wrestling mat.

But officials said Thursday that the Indian-born World Wrestling Entertainment star had earned a new reward for his body slams and headlocks — a promotion in Punjab's police force.

The entertainer, whose real name is Dilip Singh Rana, kept his day job as a police officer in the northern state of Punjab when he moved to the United States to wrestle.

Police officials granted him extended sick leave in 2006 and were happy he used that time to become a star.

"He has brought the force international fame and has made us all very proud with his many achievements as a wrestler," said senior police official Rajan Gupta.

"It was the Punjab Police that first nurtured and promoted The Great Khali as a bodybuilder and wrestler," Gupta said.

Still with the WWE, Rana is expected to return for a stint of police work next week. It's unclear how long he'll be with the force.

Rana, previously an assistant sub inspector, is now a sub inspector. It wasn't known if the promotion would raise Rana's salary from its current 15,000 rupees (US$375; €243) a month.

In addition to wrestling, Rana also acts, playing alongside Adam's Sandler in "The Longest Yard" in 2005.

He has said he would like to continue wrestling and pursue a career in Bollywood.

Rana, who made his wrestling debut in April 2006, took his moniker after Kali, the Hindu goddess of destruction who wears a necklace of human heads.

His biography on the WWE Web site says: "This enormous monster has walked the jungles of India unafraid of pythons and wrestled White Bengal tigers."

WWE bouts are real, not manipulated, says Khali

India’s first-ever World Wrestling Entertainment champion, Daleep Singh Rana, popularly known as Khali, claimed on Wednesday that their bitterly fought bouts were all real and not stage managed as perceived by the masses.

The 7.3 feet tall Khali, currently taking a break after his around three-year stint in the WWE, rubbished the notion that performance of the wrestlers were manipulated by media during broadcast.

“Everything whatever you see out there is real. Sometimes wrestlers receive serious injuries, and even die on the ring. There is no way of manipulation by media,” Khali told a news agency.

Khali was surprised to see his popularity in India where cricket and Bollywood actors draw much of the fanfare.

“I didn’t expect such fanfare in India, where, I thought only cricket and film stars enjoy publicity,” he said.

He fondly recalled meeting Sachin Tendulkar in Mumbai and revealed that the master batsman invited him for an Indian Premier League match.

Khali, who has a “very busy schedule in India”, said “I am interested to visit the ground at least once. I will surely try to find some time.”

Khali believes the country had great prospect in the wrestling at the highest level and offered his help the aspirants.

Spinning a ball on the end of his finger, the keen Aston Villa fan kept the youngsters entertained with his skills.

Visiting St Aidan's primary school in his role as President of the Football Association, the royal not only chatted to the football-mad children, he also joined them for a game in the playground - much to their delight.

"It was really exciting to meet the future King," 11-year-old Hayley Probert enthused. "He started talking to me about football and what teams we support. He supports Aston Villa."

Mariah shows off her new husband at New York gig - and changes her mind about starting a family

Ecstatic: Nick and Mariah poses backstage at Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People Of The Year gala in New York

Newlywed singer Mariah Carey has spoken for the first time about her "soul mate" and admitted she has changed her mind about starting a family.

The 38-year-old singer wed rapper/actor Nick Cannon, 27, at her private estate in the Bahamas on April 30th after a whirlwind six week romance.

The giddy newlyweds made their first public appearance as husband and wife at Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People In The World gala in New York last night, where Mariah was performing.

Dressed in a tight-fitting silver dress, the radiant bride flashed her wedding ring and proudly cuddled her new husband.

Following her performance, Mariah changed into a little black dress for a romantic meal with Nick at the Waverly Inn.

Speaking for the first time about their speedy marriage to American magazine People, Mariah revealed she had got a 'Mrs Cannon' tattoo before the nuptials, with Nick getting a simple 'Mariah' etching.

Despite saying just a month ago she didn't want children because it make her feel "violated", Mariah has made an astonishing u-turn by declaring the purpose of marriage is to start a family.

The Hero singer said: "It's (having children) part of the whole purpose of getting married.

"I'd just want our children to have the best childhood and upbringing they possibly could."

The couple, who originally met at the Kids' Choice Awards in 2005, fell for each other when Nick flew to Antigua at the end of March to play Mariah's love interest new video Bye Bye.

Nick proposed to Mariah on April 26 on the roof of her Manhattan apartment as they watched a lighting display on the Empire State Building to celebrate the success of her new album E=MC2.

He surprised Mariah by presenting her with a kids' ring pop candy ring, which had a £1.25million, 17 carat diamond ring hidden inside the plastic casing.

Nick said: "She ran away and got all shy."

During a helicopter ride over the city later that night, Nick proposed again and Mariah finally accepted.

Just days later, the couple wed in a sunset ceremony at Mariah's home on Windermere Island in the presence of a few friends and family members.

Mariah explained: "We really do feel we are soulmates. I never felt a love like this was in the cards for me."

"My pastor Clarence Keaton flew in from New York. The whole wedding was really beautiful and sweet. Being there with loved ones under the sky ... it was a spiritual moment."

Mariah walked down the aisle in an off-white dress by Nile Cmylo and Christian Louboutin heels, while Nick wore a white suit by Balenciaga.

Nick admitted he nearly fainted during the ceremony: "I was elated, but I was thinking, 'Don't pass out.'

"(The pastor) said, 'The eyes are the window to the soul,' then gave us an entire minute to stare into each other's eyes. So I was saying, 'Don't cry.'"

This is the first marriage for Nick, who ended his five month engagement to model Selita Ebanks in October, while Mariah divorced music mogul Tommy Mottola in 1998 after five years of marriage.
