Heath Ledger: Family attends "The Dark Knight" premiere

Heath Ledger: Family attends "The Dark Knight" premiere

Late actor Heath Ledger's father Kim, sister Kate and mother Sally Bell attended The Dark Knight premiere on Monday in New York.

Heath Ledger's former girlfriend Naomi Watts and her partner Liev Schreiber also attended the premiere. Ledger's parents bypassed the red carpet and ducked into the theater to watch their late son's play "The Joker" in the latest Batman film.

As his father Kim Ledger left the show, he was asked how he felt to attend. At this he immediately responded with the thumbs-up and said, "It was very good".

British actor Michael Caine, who plays Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred, believed that atleast Heath Ledger should receive a best supporting actor nomination.

Michael Caine said, "My favourite part of the film is the opening monologue of Heath Ledger as The Joker, it's one of the best close-ups I've ever seen in my life. He was a young actor and this is his moment. I mean, he did Brokeback Mountain which was fine and he never got the Oscar. He's going to get the Oscar for this".

Another co-star Maggie Gyllenhaal said, "He's so good in the movie. I mean really remarkable. But even before this movie he really had an effect on people".

Co-star Aaron Eckhart said, "I am especially happy for Heath Ledger, and sad he is not with us tonight. But we are going to honour him in this movie. He is huge".

Sam Rubin, a respected entertainment correspondent for Los Angeles KTLA network, said, "Heath Ledger would absolutely be nominated for an Oscar, and at this point in the year is a hands-down favourite to win it posthumously. Ledger offers perfect pitch, perfect tone, his Joker hits all the right notes".

The Dark Knight opens in Australia on July 16.
