An Upstart Challenges the Big Web Browsers
SAN FRANCISCO — The browser, that porthole onto the broad horizon of the Web, is about to get some fancy new window dressing.
Next month, after three years of development and six months of public testing, Mozilla, the insurgent browser developer that rose from the ashes of Netscape, will release Firefox 3.0. It will feature a few tricks that could change the way people organize and find the sites they visit most frequently.
Not to be outdone, Microsoft recently took the wraps off the first public test version of the latest edition of Internet Explorer, which is used by about 75 percent of all computer owners, according to Net Applications, a market share tracking firm. The finished version of Internet Explorer 8 could be released by the end of the year and is expected to have additional features.
Even Apple, which once politely kept its Safari browser within the confines of its own devices, is making a somewhat controversial push to get it onto the computers of people who use Windows PCs.
In other words, the browser war — the skirmish that landed Microsoft in antitrust trouble in the ’90s — is heating up again.
“The typical browser for today’s consumer doesn’t look all that different than it did 10 years ago,” said Larry Cheng, a partner at Fidelity Ventures, one of the firms that invested in Flock, a browser start-up. “That is an unsustainable trend that is the launching point for the second browser war, which will not be won by monopolistic muscle but by innovation.”
Browsers have always been viewed as crucial on-ramps to the Web. Nevertheless, after vanquishing Netscape, the first commercial browser developer, Microsoft waited five years before releasing the sixth version of Internet Explorer in 2006. Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer group, says the company was focused on plugging security holes during that time.
America Online, which acquired Netscape, spun off the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation in 2003. Its Firefox browser soon inspired an open-source movement backed by computer enthusiasts. Early versions of Firefox introduced features like a built-in pop-up blocker to kill ads, and tabbed browsing, which lets users toggle between Web windows.
Firefox now has 170 million users around the world and an 18 percent share of the browser market, according to Net Applications. That is especially impressive given that most of its users have made the active choice to download the software, while Internet Explorer is installed on most PCs at the factory.
In addition to giving Microsoft a kick in its competitive pants, Firefox has also reinforced for the high-tech industry the financial and strategic value of the browser. In 2004, Google struck a deal with Mozilla to include a Google search box tucked into a corner of the Firefox browser. According to Mozilla’s most recent tax documents, in 2006 Google paid Mozilla $65 million for the resulting traffic to its search listings.
With tasks like e-mail and word processing now migrating from the PC to the Internet, analysts and industry players think the browser will soon become even more valuable and strategically important.
“People in the industry foresee a time in which for many people, the only thing they’ll need on a computer is a browser,” said Mitch Kapor, the software pioneer who now sits on the board of the Mozilla Foundation and has created a start-up, FoxMarks, that is developing a tool to synchronize bookmarks between computers. “The browser is just extraordinarily strategic.”
That notion has helped to rekindle the browser wars and has resulted in the latest wave of innovation. Firefox 3.0, for example, runs more than twice as fast as the previous version while using less memory, Mozilla says.
The browser is also smarter and maintains three months of a user’s browsing history to try to predict what site he or she may want to visit. Typing the word “football” into the browser, for example, quickly generates a list of all the sites visited with “football” in the name or description.
Firefox has named this new tool the “awesome bar” and says it could replace the need for people to maintain long and messy lists of bookmarks. It will also personalize the browser for an individual user.
“Sitting at somebody else’s computer and using their browser is going to become a very awkward experience,” said Mitchell Baker, chairwoman of the Mozilla Foundation.
Internet Explorer 8, from Microsoft, promises its own set of tricks. One new tool, Web slices, allows a user to bookmark a dynamic piece of a Web site, like an online auction or a sports score, and save it in the margin of the browser, where the user can watch as it changes.
Another new feature, called activities, allows users to highlight text on a page, click on it, then instantly send it to another site, like a mapping, e-mail or blogging service.
Asked whether Firefox’s increasing popularity had motivated these and other improvements, Mr. Hachamovitch of Microsoft said only, “We love to compete.” But he did say that amid the new competitive pressures, “the quality and quantity of my team has gone up significantly.”
His group will have one other company besides Mozilla to keep its eye on: Apple’s Safari Web browser has a little over 5 percent of the market, according to Net Applications, and subsists mostly on the loyalty of devoted Mac and iPhone owners.
But in March, deploying the kind of strategic jujitsu more commonly associated with Microsoft in the past, Apple began using the automatic update software that is packaged with its iTunes music player to deliver Safari onto the computers of people who use Windows. (Users had to specifically decline the Safari offer if they didn’t want the browser to be downloaded to their computers.)
The tactic irked even Apple fans in the blogosphere, along with Apple’s browser rivals. But it was at least partly successful: Net Applications reported that Apple’s market share on Windows computers had tripled since March.
In a statement released last month addressing the comments about the maneuver, Apple said it had made it easier for customers to distinguish minor updates from new programs delivered through the update software.
Apple’s boldness underscores the new importance of the Web browser in a world that is increasingly shifting online.
Shawn Hardin, chief executive of Flock, which is developing a browser that helps users share photos, videos and blog entries more easily, said consumers would ultimately benefit from the new browser battle.
“We are seeing choice in the browser market really emerge as a significant force for the first time in a while,” Mr. Hardin said.

New Bangalore airport handles 331 flights on launch day
Bangalore: The newly launched Bengaluru International Airport said it handled 341 air traffic movements, including 172 arrivals and 159 departures on Saturday. This was a phenomenal achievement given that it was the inaugural day of the launch of commercial operations.
"It was business as usual on Day 1. Though a weekend, we have been well prepared to handle the heavy traffic from the new airport. The air traffic control guided about 100 aircraft in landing and take off during the first 24 hours of commencing the operations," a spokesperson of the airport operator, Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) said.
The Rs 2,500-crore airport at Devanahalli, located about 40 km from Bangalore, launched operations in the early hours of Saturday, thanks to a Election Commission imposed moratorium on operations in place because of the ongoing State elections in Karnataka. India's flag carrier, Air India, had the privilege to fly out the first aircraft - to Singapore - 15 minutes past Friday midnight (00.15 IST).
The city's old HAL airport, located in the city, simultaneously closed operations.
"The first 18 hours of day one operations have been satisfactory in comparison to other such transitions the world over. Teething problems apart, the operational take-off has been smooth. The glitches will be tackled within a week," BIAL said in a statement later.

SBI raises deposit rates by up to 0.50 pc from next month
Mumbai (PTI): In order to lure depositors to meet its credit and other needs, country's largest lender State Bank of India today announced an increase in medium to long term fixed deposits rates by up to 0.50 per cent from June 1.
Last month too, SBI had raised fixed deposit rates and the latest move is likely to have a fall out on interest rates regime in the banking sector, even though the second largest PSU bank PNB said it would take a call on rates after its Asset Liability Committee (ALCO) meeting.
State Bank of India will increase interest rates on deposits of two year to less than three years by 0.25 per cent to 8.75 per cent.
Rates on deposits of three years to less than five years would be raised by 0.15 per cent to 8.85, while those on deposits of five years and up to ten years by 0.50 per cent to nine per cent, the bank said in a statement here.
Deposit rates for less than two years will continue to fetch the same interest rate.
The interest rate hike is expected to have an effect on the bank's net interest margin, which dropped from 3.41 per cent in 2006-07 to 3.07 per cent in 2007-08.

China earthquake: Deadly aftershock
The strongest aftershock since the Sichuan earthquake two weeks ago has hit the Chinese province sending survivors and residents pouring on to the streets in panic.
The shock hit just as soldiers were preparing for an attempt to blow up a dangerous landslide that was threatening to burst, sending a lake formed behind it since the quake flooding down on to refugees beneath.
The aftershock, which measured 6.4 on the Richter scale, according to the Chinese authorities, killed one person in the city of Guangyan, near the epicentre, and sent another 71,000 houses tumbling to the ground. More than 260 people were injured.
Earlier, the government said the number of dead from the original quake had reached 62,664 with another 23,775 people missing. It is believed the total death toll may reach more than 80,000.
State media said it was feared that the aftershock might disrupt an attempt to blow up a natural dam formed by a landslide in the hills above Beichuan, one of the worst-hit towns.
Earlier, 1,600 soldiers and police had begun a trek up to the dam, around two miles upstream from the town. Each was carrying 22 pounds of explosive to be used to blast a hole through the dam to release the water.
Most residents of Beichuan have already been evacuated, but officials say there is no danger to villagers who are still living in the ruins of their houses on the hillsides above the town.
The lake, on Tangjia mountain, was now 723 metres deep, E Jingpin, the vice minister of water resources, said in Beijing.
”The relief work for Tangjia Shan quake lake is now at critical stage,” he said.
Troops were prevented from landing by helicopter because of fog, but the terrain in the area is steep and wooded.
The lake is one of 34 so-called “barrier lakes” formed by landslides. In addition, the authorities say 69 dams have been left in danger of bursting, 310 faced “highly dangerous situations”, while a further 1,424 faced moderate risks.
”If these reservoirs were to overflow, it would be a serious threat to the lives and property of the people downstream, and would influence the supply of water for agriculture and industry,” Mr E said.
Meanwhile, media reported the freeing of an 80-year-old disabled man from the ruins of his house on Friday. Xiao Zhihu had been pinned for 11 days by a concrete pillar that had fallen across his legs, but had been kept alive by food and water fed to him by his wife.
The government also said it was shortening the amount of time the Olympic torch would spend in Tibet from three days to one.
It has faced calls to abandon the Tibetan leg of the relay altogether since the outbreak of unrest in the province in March, but it attributed the reason to the need to make up time for the three days it was suspended for a period of national mourning for the quake’s victims.

Burma asks for $11bn to rebuild
REPRESENTATIVES of more than 50 nations met in cyclone-stricken Burma last night to pledge billions of dollars towards the country's rebuilding as speculation grew that the junta was preparing to release imprisoned pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest.
Burma's ruling generals want the world to donate nearly $US11billion ($11.5 billion) to rebuild the country and help about 2.4 million survivors in need of aid.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said last night he was hopeful "a turning point" had been reached in tackling Burma's crisis.
The one-day, 52-nation conference began on a note of optimism following promises by the military junta that foreign aid workers could enter the most devastated areas, from which they have been banned since the cyclone three weeks ago.
"I hope this marks a turning point in tackling the challenges facing this country," Mr Ban told about 500 delegates after a minute's silence for the dead.
But he said international relief workers and foreign medical teams must have "unhindered access to the areas hardest hit by the disaster".
Supporters of the democratically elected leader of Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi, also speculated yesterday that the junta was planning an easing of her house arrest conditions or even a release, as part of its concessions to huge international pressure. The detention order that confined her to a fifth consecutive year of incarceration expired at the weekend.
Burmese online publications have carried unconfirmed reports that the Nobel Peace Prize winner's release was imminent.
But Britain's Secretary of State for International Development, Douglas Alexander, told Britain's The Observer newspaper that he would not be raising the issue of Ms Suu Kyi's imprisonment as it was "inappropriate when the utmost importance is ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid".
Mr Alexander added that the international community wanted to see "full and unfettered access for aid workers" as a condition for help.
Prime Minister Thein Sein said international aid "with no strings attached" was welcome but only civilian vessels could take part in the aid operation.
"Relief supplies can be transported by land, air or sea. But if relief supplies have to be transported by water, civilian vessels can come in through Yangon (Rangoon) port," he said.
US, British and French warships, loaded with humanitarian supplies, have been cruising off Burma's coast. But last week, state media said they would not be allowed into the country, citing fears of an American invasion to snatch the country's oil supplies.
General Thein Sein yesterday presented a long list of urgent needs, including temporary shelters, rice seeds, fertiliser, fishing boats and new salt factories.
Burma's military regime was expected to call for US$10.7 billion in foreign funds. But donors were unlikely to dig deep into their pockets until they actually gained access to devastated regions from which foreigners had been earlier banned.
Washington's representative, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Scot Marciel, said the US was prepared to offer much more than the US$20.5 million already donated. But only if international disaster experts were allowed to assess conditions in affected areas to determine how best to help the victims.
For weeks, the junta insisted it could handle the relief effort alone, even though reporters who have reached the delta say many are still without government assistance and that the situation is grim.
Bodies of some of the estimated 133,000 people left dead or missing are rotting in canals. There is little food, rice paddies are in ruins, and there have been international warnings of a possible famine ahead.
Burma's generals have a long history of making promises to UN envoys, then breaking them when the international spotlight fades.
The UN has repeatedly failed to convince the military to make democratic reforms and to release opposition leader Ms Suu Kyi, whose five-year period of house arrest expires this week.
Nyan Win, spokesman for Ms Suu Kyi's National League of Democracy, said yesterday there has been "no sign at all" that she would be released. He said a decision on whether to free her or continue her detention would probably come today.
An estimate released on Saturday by the UN said of the total 2.4 million people affected by the storm, about 42 per cent had received some kind of emergency assistance. But of the two million people living in the 15 worst-affected townships, only 23 per cent had been reached.
The UN has launched an emergency appeal for $US201 million. That figure will likely increase once disaster relief experts are able to survey the Irrawaddy Delta.
So far, the UN had received about $US50 million in contributions and about $US42.5 million in pledges in response to the appeal, a UN spokeswoman said.
Aid agencies said much needed to be clarified from Mr Ban's meeting, ranging from logistical issues about when aid workers' visas would be granted to how long they would be allowed to stay in Burma and where they could work.
Official estimates put the death toll at about 78,000, with another 56,000 missing. Burma has estimated the economic damage at about US$11 billion.

Bangalore finally gets a new airport
The seventeen-year-old wait by Bangaloreans finally ended on Friday night - The swanky new Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) at Devanahalli became operational when the Indian carrier IC 609 from Mumbai made a touch down at 22:37 pm.
"It is a proud moment for Bangalore and Karnataka", exclaimed Infosys employee Sheela Shenoy, the first air passenger to set her foot on the airport, the first phase of which has been constructed at a cost of Rs 2,470 crore.
Her fellow passengers, who disembarked from the Indian aircraft, too were all enthused about the new facility that has been added to Bangalore. But what left a majority of the passengers perplexed was the absence of any gala celebrations. An elderly passenger who was greeted by flowers by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) CEO Albert Brunner and other officials on his arrival quipped: "This new airport has created a record of sorts in the country as it has been opened for civil operations minus extravaganza and politicians."
Not just the arriving passengers, even the flight crew sported a smile on their faces as they walked out of the new airport. The captain of IC 609 Sunil Vasisht could not hide his excitement. "It is a world-class airport, the air traffic control system was very clear. Professionals are running the ATC and we did not face any problems in landing here. In fact, the landing has been a wonderful experience," Vasisht said.
Though the arrival side of the terminal building was full of mirth, the departure lounge saw a few anxious moments as the passengers had to wait till midnight for take-off. The first flight to take off was a Singapore-bound Indian carrier at 00:01 hours with 144 passengers on-board.
The relatives and well-wishers of the outbound passengers were all praise for the airport. The glitzy terminal building and the well-lit road leading to it gave many an experience of a having landed in a foreign locale. "After descending the Hebbal flyover, it was a fast drive to the airport. Unlike the HAL airport which is congested, this airport is a different experience," said Snehalatha Ravi, who had come to drop her software professional-son at the airport.
Many passengers, though impressed with the facility, were a bit irked on the first day as the check-in counters were to too slow. A R Venkatachalam, an HP executive on his way to Singapore, commented: "If we were not made to wait this long, it would have been a really nice experience." A few other software professionals, especially those working at Whitefield and Electronic City, complained that faster connectivity was still a problem area. They said the existing HAL airport should be allowed to operate flights on short-haul routes.

David Cook wins American Idol 2008
David Cook celebrates winning the seventh season of "American Idol"Though Archuleta was projected to win after Tuesday's performances, Cook took the title by 56 to 44 percent.
"American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest called it "the closest competition we've seen," and while that remains up for debate, it certainly drew an audience willing to text and phone in their support.
With approximately 97.5 million votes cast, this season's tally shattered the show's previous record by more than 23 million. In just four hours, last night's vote came close to matching the count cast in the 2004 election. Seacrest revealed early on — before the first commercial break, astonishingly — that the season-seven finale tally was split 56 to 44 percent.
But which of the Davids would it be, at the end of this Super Bowl-esque cap to the first male-on-male showdown since season two? David "Sugarfoot" Cook, the 25-year-old "Daughtry Dos" with the Peppermint Patty comb-over, or David Archuleta, the talented, annoyingly humble 17-year-old with the cherubic face? Either way, they were both walking away with a Ford Escape Hybrid, the keys to which were handed to them about halfway through the show, following a blooper reel highlighting all of the commercial flubs committed by the top 12.
The two Davids stood with Seacrest at the center of the stage, with their arms around each other, as Edward Boddington, chairman of Telescope, the show's independent vote management company, came out with the envelope. Cook seemed nervous, and Archuleta looked relaxed. Winning, Seacrest said, by "12 million votes is ... David ... Cook."
Archuleta seemed at once stunned and bummed — as did his father, who was in the audience. Cook — who went to the "Idol" auditions with no intent on going before the judges, only to support his brother — hugged his rival, and then buckled, putting his hands over his knees as the tears welled. He broke down, holding his face in his hands, as the sparks and confetti started to fly.
As if he knew the results beforehand, judge Simon Cowell apologized for being harsh on Cook the previous evening, having watched the show again at home. (On the red carpet earlier in the night, Cowell admitted to MTV News that he'd been hasty on Tuesday.) "It wasn't quite so clear-cut as we called it," he said. "In fact, David, I will take this opportunity to apologize, because I was verging on disrespectful with you, and I don't think you deserve that." He said he didn't care who won, that he thought they'd both done "terrific."
By the end of Tuesday's epic battle between the rocker and the crooner, it seemed like the title was Archuleta's for the taking, and Cowell even said as much. Cook even seemed to concede the competition just hours earlier.
The judges had criticized Cook's decision to tackle Collective Soul's "The World I Know" instead of breaking out Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" or Lionel Richie's "Hello," two songs he'd performed early in the competition, to rave reviews. It wasn't the safest choice, and could have been the difference between winning and losing. On the other hand, Archuleta did John Lennon's "Imagine," which he'd performed early in the competition.
As Wednesday's show opened, the two Davids were stationed center stage at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live, beneath a blinding spotlight, facing each other and decked all in white. The camera circled them — Cook stared at Archuleta, his face stern, perhaps at peace with the idea of finishing second, while his competitor stared back calmly. The crowd — which included "High School Musical" star Ashley Tisdale — roared for the finalists, who seemed oddly unruffled, despite the enormity of the night.
Seacrest threw it to season-four finalist Mikalah Gordon in Kansas City, Missouri (near Cook's hometown of Blue Springs), and season three's Matt Rogers (who called the teen "America's most famous high school student") in Archuleta's stomping grounds, Salt Lake City, Utah. Then the Davids teamed up for a cover of "Hero" from the first "Spider-Man" movie — Archuleta the Chad Kroeger to Cook's Josie Scott. Next came the top 12, dressed all in white, tackling the Temptations' "Get Ready."
All night, Cook was in the spotlight, singing songs that fit his style, and it was clear the man was having fun, perhaps mindful of the fact that it might be over after a few commercial breaks. He joined ZZ Top — their beards, in all their glorious wonder, making Zakk Wylde envious somewhere — for "Sharp-Dressed Man," and Cook couldn't have looked giddier.
Archuleta, too, got to perform with an artist more in his bailiwick, as he joined OneRepublic for their hit "Apologize."
Recently rejected finalist Jason Castro was invited out to reprise is breakthrough performance of Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," while Seal sang his "Waiting for You" with third-place finisher Syesha Mercado. This summer's "American Idol" tour was previewed, with performances from the top-six girls (who delivered a Donna Summer medley) and the top-six guys (doing the same for Bryan Adams). Michael Johns and Carly Smithson also hooked up for a soulful and powerful duet: the Box Tops' "The Letter."
Just before the results came down, the top 12 sang George Michael's "Faith," "Father Figure" (in which former stripper David Hernandez whispered the word "naked") and "Faith." Then, Michael himself materialized, and had fearlessly jubilant judge Paula Abdul in tears as he crooned his heart-wrenching song "Praying for Time."
Both of the Davids appeared in separate "Guitar Hero" commercials during two of the breaks. In the spots, Cook and Archuleta roll around in nothing but their skivvies and button-down shirts, in a spoof of Tom Cruise's "Risky Business."
Other highlights of Wednesday's finale include Jimmy Kimmel's encore roast of Cowell, Brooke White's duet with Graham Nash on "Teach Your Children," an unnecessary performance from contestant Renaldo Lapuz of his tortuously repetitious tune "You Are My Brother" and a shameless — albeit hilarious — promotion of Mike Myers' upcoming film "The Love Guru."
Portraying the title character Pitka, Myers met with the two remaining "Idol" hopefuls and offered some sound advice to Cook: "Shave. The last time I saw stubble like that, I was at a 'Melrose Place' party listening to Alice in Chains on my Discman." For Archuleta? "You're so young, and yet, soon, you will have huge success," Myers said. "Also soon, you'll have hair in weird and wonderful places." (mtv.com)

CET RESULTS WITHIN A WEEK
Counselling from June 2
Bangalore,(DM)- The Director of Karnataka Examination Authority and Commissioner of the Department of Pre-University Education, S.G. Hegde, said here on Saturday that the CET results-2008 would be announced within a week.
A deadline of one week has been set for the announcement of results of 12th standard CBSE and ICSE exams. If the respective Central Boards do not announce the results by then, the Authority will go ahead with announcement of CET results, he said.
He was speaking at the "CET-COMED-K counselling guidance" organised at Teachers Bhavan here.
"The CET results are ready to be announced. The announcement of results is getting delayed because the Central Boards are yet to declare their 12th standard results," he added.
Counselling
"As already scheduled, the Authority will begin counselling room June 2. A time of at least a week has to be given to the students to prepare for the counselling," he explained.
The OMR copy of every student, who wrote the CET examination, will be published in the Authority's website. The OMR copy will be published with the intention that any discrepancy, if found in this list, can be que-stioned, he explained.
The students and their parents need not be anxious about the counselling process. Everything will go on in a transparent manner and the Authority will function in a student-friendly manner, he said.
PUC marks
Speaking on the occasion, Syed Jamaal, the Administrative Officer of the Authority, said that along with the CET results, the marks obtained by the respective students in the PU examination will also be published in the website from this year. This will help the other students to iden-tify the eligibility of students who have secured ranks, he said.
He also said that the students who appear for the counselling, should bring their SSLC marks list, PU marks list, certificate for having studied in the State for seven years, DD for the prescribed amount of fees and reservation sought, if any.
The students should obtain DD in the name of the Executive Director of the Authority. There is a provision for bringing more than one DD. If the students had obtained the DD for a higher amount than the prescribed admission fee for the course they have selected, then the balance amount will be paid at the spot through a cheque issued in the student's name, he said.
In case if the eligible student obtains DD for a lesser amount than the prescribed fee, then also the student will be allotted seat.
Difficult round
Admission will be granted only if that student pays up the prescribed fee in full before the commencement of casual round. With the exception of SC / ST students, all the students belonging to different categories, should compulsorily bring DD, he explained.
The casual round of counselling is a very difficult one. After going through two rounds, the student should be firm on the course that he is going to select in this round, he advised. (starofmysore.com)

Nadal beats Federer in Hamburg to complete clay title
Rafael Nadal beat four-time champion Roger Federer 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 in the Hamburg Masters final on Sunday to complete his collection of major clay court titles.
The second-ranked Spaniard Nadal saved two set points as he fought from 5-1 down in the first set, lost the second after initially overcoming a 5-2 deficit, but never looked back after breaking Federer for 3-1 in the third.
Nadal, 21, wrapped up matters with a backhand winner after two hours 52 minutes and sunk on his knees afterwards in delight.
Federer compiled an unusually high number of 41 unforced errors while Nadal had just 28.
Hamburg was the only big clay title eluding Nadal, who has three straight French Open crowns and also won at the Masters in Monte Carlo and Rome.
Nadal won his 26th career title, of which 21 are on his favourite surface, where he has a 108-2 record since April 2005, the other defeat coming in Rome almost two weeks ago against compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero.
His only defeat in a clay final came 2007 in Hamburg against Federer. He leads Federer 10-6 overall and 8-1 on clay.
The Hamburg win was worth 360,000 euros, Federer got half the amount with 180,000 euros.
"The whole week has been special for me," said Nadal. Federer acknowledged that Nadal played "great all week and throughout the clay court season."
Federer lost for the first time in Hamburg (and in Germany) since a third-round defeat in 2003 to Australian Mark Philippoussis. He won 41 straight matches in Hamburg and Halle going into Sunday's game.
At first it appeared that Federer would extend that streak as he raced off to a 5-1 lead. But he then wasted a set point in the seventh game and other in the eighth as Nadal took the set after all with six unanswered games.
Nadal broke in the opening game of the second but soon found himself 5-2 down. Again, he fought back, to 5-5 plus three break points for 6-5. But this time around Federer managed to deny the comeback as he breezed through the tiebreak.
It was all over for Federer when Nadal broke for 3-1 in the third. The Spaniard saved a break point at 4-2 and lifted the trophy a few minutes later.
The two could meet again at the French Open which start next Sunday.
"I am disappointed to lose. Hopefully I can get over it for Paris," said Federer. (ndtv.com)

Apple’s 3G iPhone Arriving India Soon
Apple’s iPhones are ready to arrive in India at any time now! Your long awaited wait may end soon. Two leading mobile phone service providers of the region, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone, have recently reached to an agreement with the Apple separately for making available iPhones to the Indian consumers. Both the players have promised to unveil their coveted service before the year-end. Though, exact date of launching the exotic device has yet not been made public by any of the parties; but, seeing the market economy, it can be predicted that the Apple’s iPhones are very likely to land here as great festival bonanza. But, if the government is going to implement the VI pay commission’s recommendations before the festival, chances of which is quite less, the companies may reschedule their plan and may unlock the mystery box before the festival season!
Apple’s iPhone, a next generation 3G mobile handset, is an intelligent mobile device that looks pretty conspicuous and works seamlessly combining the functions of an iPod with the web browsing capabilities of a desktop in a sensual touch navigation ambience. Technologically powerful device will allow you to stay connected with the web all the times without compromising any of the connection speeds or the telephony features. Expected cost of the unlocked 3G set is likely to be around Rs. 22,000 - Rs. 23,000.
Though, Bharti has yet not confirmed their agreement with Apple, neither they have rejected the media speculation; but with SingTel’s entry into the foray of distributing iPhones in the Asia-Pacific region has automatically made Bharti an authorized contender for the Apple’s iPhones. SingTel has about 30.5% stake in India’s leading telecom operator Bharti Airtel. With Airtel’s appearance in the most promising iPhone market, Vodafone will no more be the exclusive carrier. The dual carrier business concept will permit Indian’s to avail a better service with competitive price options. Even, consumers will be able to switch operators. (newsline365.com)

Smiling unwillingly is bad for health
LONDON: Forcefully flashing your teeth at work is dangerous for health, scientists have warned.
According to German researchers, forcing staff to be happy and polite all the time is likely to make them sick.
They believe most at risk are flight attendants, salesmen, call centre operators, waiters and other workers in close contact with the public.
Professor Dieter Zapf, a researcher at Frankfurt University, Germany, said fake friendliness led to depression, stress and hit the immune system.
This can trigger more serious ailments such as high blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems.
"Every time a person is forced to repress his true feelings there are negative consequences," the Mirror quoted him, as saying.
In order to reach the conclusions, for over two years, 4,000 volunteers including shop workers and flight attendants, were put in an imaginary call centre and abused by clients.
Some could answer back, while others had to stay polite and friendly.
Those allowed to stand up to clients had a rapid heartbeat for a brief period, but those who had to remain friendly found their hearts were still racing long after the client had hung up.
Researchers decided "being friendly against one's will causes nothing but stress".
Prof Zapf said: "We are all able to rein in our emotions, but it becomes difficult to do this over a protracted period as cabin attendants are forced to on long-haul flights.
"These people need space away from the passengers where they can be on their own and let feelings run free.
"We have to get away from the 'customer is king' attitude and show more respect to those in service industries."

It will also be curtains for commercial flights by scheduled airlines at the nearly 50-year-old defence airport run by the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.
The operator company BIAL, already bitten twice over the airport opening date (AOD), however, is keeping the lid on the AOD and maintains that it is awaiting the formal word from the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA).
The opening was postponed twice — from March 28 as the air traffic control system was not in place; and later from May 11 for political reasons as the three-phase Karnataka elections end on May 22.
Industry sources indicated that the Ministry has issued a Government notification that the new airport will begin functioning from May 23; the first departure will be just past midnight on May 23; the first landing will be four hours earlier at 8 p.m. on May 22.
BIAL is planning a low-key opening next week and may have a formal inauguration in the first week of June when a new State Government will be in place, it is learnt.
A well-placed aviation source closely linked with the BIAL operations said the thumbs-up has been received to begin operations at Devanahalli on the intervening midnight of May 22-23. In fact, the date was advanced from May 25 in the last two days.
Simulation training
The official familiar with the events said the Airports Authority of India had posted 60 officers on the site. Around 30-40 of them with training have moved in and are working round-the-clock in four shifts. They would be handling flights currently numbering 350-400 a day. Simulation training on the site has been completed in the past one month.
AAI will be in charge of air traffic management in Bangalore for the first time: this has been handled at the HAL airport by HAL’s own ATCs.
Airline sources also said BIAL has sounded them about the change-over.
The quick pace of developments this week after a two-month lull comes after the talks that BIAL brass had with the Ministry officials in New Delhi on May 12. The Ministry officials had then said the HAL airport would close for civil flights when BIAL opened towards the end of May and that BIAL’s mandatory licence to run the airport was on its way.

George's wife creating garden tribute for the green-fingered Beatle

Best known for his musical talents, late Beatle George Harrison also had a green-fingered side, saying he felt closer to God when he was in his garden. And now, six years after the musician passed away, his widow is planning a floral tribute to her husband at the annual garden festival he loved so much.
Olivia Harris, 59, is to present a specially designed garden at the Chelsea Flower Show - Britain's biggest horticultural event - at which George was a regular, and could often be seen strolling around with camera and notebook in hand. Her creation will tell the story of his life, from his beginnings in Liverpool in 1943 to his post-Beatle years.
She says her own passion for gardening sprang from the music legend's love of horticulture, particularly the inner calm it gave him. "He never felt more at peace (than in the garden)," she tells The Radio Times. "Every time I go out there I think he'll just pop out from behind a shrub, like he used to."
Gardening fans and Beatle followers alike can check out Olivia's plot at the Chelsea Flower Show from May 20-24.
