Spain defeats German for European Championship
David Villa held up the European Championship trophy, which the Spaniards had not won in 44 years.A championship 44 years in the waiting is worth a special celebration.
Spain made sure it didn’t disappoint any of its fans Sunday night, both during its 1-0 victory over Germany in Vienna, Austria, that won the European Championship, and after it.
Fernando Torres scored in the 33rd minute, and the Spaniards never backed down. Their last significant title came in the 1964 Euros.
“It is to me the most important day in Spanish football in many, many years,” Torres said.
The Spaniards got the one goal they needed and set off chants of “ES-PANA!” and “Ole, Ole Ole!” at the final whistle.
The entire Spanish squad ran over to the huge rooting section of red and gold, exchanging hugs, while many of the spent Germans collapsed to the turf.
“We played the best for the entire tournament, and we beat some great teams,” Torres said. “We beat Italy, the World Cup champion, and we beat Russia and now Germany. That is how you become champion.”
When Spain goalkeeper and captain Iker Casillas accepted the trophy on a stage, the Spanish fans began chanting the melody to their national anthem, which has no words. Thousands of camera flashes went off as the players jumped in place and then headed onto the field to show off their prize.
The Spaniards weren’t close to being finished with their celebration. They marched to their rooting section, hoisting the cup and saluting their flag-waving, firecracker-exploding fans.
“We have won in a brilliant way,” coach Luis Aragones said. “We will be able to start saying we can win, a European championship as well as any other thing.”

India Begins Pre-registering for iPhone
All those eagerly awaiting the India launch of Apple's iPhone 3G can now make sure they get their hands on the device soon after its launch -- by booking their piece online.
Both Vodafone and Airtel have started pre-registration for the iPhone 3G on their respective Web sites. However, both companies have said nothing about when the iPhone will be launched. All they've managed to reveal is that it would be coming later this year. Yet, speculation is rife that India can expect the iPhone 3G sometime in September this year.
It would be worth mentioning here that while both Vodafone and Airtel are allowing consumers to pre-register for iPhone 3G, the Indian government is yet to finalize matters regarding 3G telephony in the country. Possibly, this is one of the reasons why Vodafone and Airtel are keeping mum on the date of launch.
What's certain is that the iPhone is coming to India. So while most of you wait with bated breath for the famed gizmo, let us take you through some of its main highlights. iPhone 3G marries all of the features of the iPhone plus 3G networking to be touted as "twice as fast as the first-generation iPhone". iPhone 3G also features built-in GPS for expanded location-based mobile services, iPhone 2.0 software with support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, and compatibility with third-party applications built with the iPhone SDK (software development kit).

I am yet to find a boyfriend: Rani
She's got the perfect house, a dream bedroom, a couple of exciting projects and a film ready for release, but Rani Mukherji doesn't have a 'somebody special' to share it all with. And no, Aditva Chopra does not qualify "I am yet to find a boyfriend. I will date him first and then get married. It's still a long way off."
Reacting to the speculation about her relationship with Aditya Chopra, she says, "I am given so much [news] by the media and my fans that such irrelevant news doesn't bother me."
Pretty rounded
Unlike all her contemporaries who get thinner by the day, Rani looks pleasantly rounded. And completely happy with it. "I gained 3 kg during the shooting of Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. We had four kids on the sets who would be pampered with chips and ice cream. Saif and I couldn't resist indulging ourselves," she says candidly Ironically she says, this is what director Kunal Kapoor had initially wanted. "When we started the film, Kunal told me he wanted me to look a little roly-poly. But one day during the shooting, he told me 'you seem to have taken me too seriously You need to show some control now'," she giggles.
She rubbishes rumours that Kunal asked to diet down to 45 kg? "What!," she exclaims, "It has to be in his mind only because it's impossible for me. I love my food, and it shows on me." Rani had quietly vanished from the party scene over the past year because she was busy creating her dream home, staying hands on to get the work done. "They can continue with the thak-thak for a year," she exclaims.
And being a star doesn't speed up the process. "I wanted to shift on a certain date but the house was not ready. Finally I gave them and myself a deadline of one month. Within 30 days, I got the house in place the way I wanted."
World in my bedroom
What she also got was a dream bedroom. "I wanted Greece, London, Sydney, Switzerland... a bit of every place in my bedroom. And I have got it." Now that she has executed her job of supervisor, Rani's back on the sets playing a cricketer in a Yash Raj production opposite Shahid Kapur. "I have to get into the training to learn the sport. This one will be more difficult than whatever I have done sofar"

Working Together, Obama and Clinton Try to Show Unity
Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton at their first joint campaign appearance Friday in Unity, New Hampshire.UNITY, N.H. — Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton set off on their maiden political voyage on Friday, trading their rivalry from the presidential primary battle for a newfound display of harmony intended to set a fresh tone for any Democrats still harboring bitterness from their grueling duel.
It was a day of choreographed unity — their destination was a rally here in this small western New Hampshire town — with the two senators appearing together before the cameras for the first time. Three weeks after suspending her campaign, Mrs. Clinton renewed her endorsement and pledged to do all she could to help Democrats win the White House in the fall.
“Unity is not only a beautiful place, it’s a wonderful feeling, isn’t it?” Mrs. Clinton said. “I know what we start here in this field of unity will end on the steps of the Capitol when Barack Obama takes the oath of office.”
Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton strode onto an outdoor stage here, arm-in-arm, waving to a friendly crowd. Their messages complemented one another, as did his blue tie and her blue pantsuit.
“For sixteen months, Senator Clinton and I have shared the stage as rivals,” Mr. Obama said. “But today, I couldn’t be happier and more honored that we’re sharing it as allies in the effort to bring this country a new and better day.”
Here in Unity, the merging of the crowds did not go without a few momentary flaws. When the music was cued and the senators were introduced, they did not appear on stage. For several minutes, the crowd waited, their cheers gradually diminishing to an awkward silence. The enthusiasm sparked anew when they finally arrived and walked past large letters that spelled U-N-I-T-Y.
Mrs. Clinton spoke first, with Mr. Obama sitting on a stool. His shirtsleeves rolled up, he listened intently and often led the applause at her remarks. The crowd, a mix of loyal supporters of Mr. Obama and die-hard admirers of Mrs. Clinton, broke into a chant of “Obama, Obama, Obama.” A few moments later, several women in the crowd led a chant of “Hillary, Hillary, Hillary.”
“If you like the direction the country is going, then vote for Senator McCain, but if you think we need a new course, a new agenda, vote for Barack Obama,” Mrs. Clinton told the crowd. “To anyone who voted for me and is now considering not voting or voting for Senator McCain, I strongly urge you to reconsider.”
Mr. Obama implored Mrs. Clinton’s supporters to join the Democratic campaign. He praised the Clintons, saying: “I know how much we need both Bill and Hillary Clinton as a party and a country.” Echoing a line he heard from the crowd, he added, “She rocks. She rocks.”
The arrival of Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton stirred something of a spectacle here, with hundreds of people turning out on the grounds of an old elementary school. The site was selected for the community’s symbolic name and the fact that both candidates received 107 votes in the town during the state’s primary in January.
If the purpose of the day was to telegraph a unified Democratic Party, images of that message were plentiful.
Their motorcades arrived simultaneously at an airport in Washington, where they exchanged a kiss and smiled as they stepped onto the same chartered plane. They sat in adjoining seats, chatting the whole flight to New Hampshire. Then, for more than an hour, they rode on the same bus to Unity.
On a sultry summer day, with the aroma of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs in the air, the rally took on the trappings of a political festival. A giant blue banner, “Unite for Change” provided a backdrop against a meadow of trees. Many of those in the crowd, who came from New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and beyond, wore faded stickers of their favorite candidate.
The pleasantries, though, belied a litany of extenuating issues between the two former rivals. Mrs. Clinton asked a Washington powerbroker lawyer, Robert Barnett, to help negotiate the talks, which include helping repay her campaign debt and securing a prominent spot at the party’s summer convention.
None of those details were discussed, at least in public, on Friday.
“Are you ready for change in Washington?” New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch asked the crowd, which answered with resounding approval.
The rally came one day after the two senators met at an invitation-only gathering Thursday evening in Washington. Mrs. Clinton invited Mr. Obama to meet her leading contributors (He brought a personal check of $2,300 as a goodwill gesture to help wipe away more than $12 million in debt for her campaign expenses.) and asked them to help Mr. Obama defeat Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee.
“We have to make it a priority in our lives to elect Barack Obama the next president of the United States,” Mrs. Clinton told her supporters, including many who came with their own checks for Mr. Obama’s campaign. “his was a hard-fought campaign. That’s what made it so exciting and intense and why people’s passions ran so high on both sides. I know my supporters have extremely strong feelings, and I know Barack’s do as well.
She added, “But we are a family, and we have an opportunity now to really demonstrate clearly we do know what’s at stake, and we will do whatever it takes to win back this White House.”
For his part, Mr. Obama urged his supporters to help ease Mrs. Clinton’s debt and pave the way for her to become a leading surrogate for his campaign. There was no mention of whether she will be considered as a prospective running mate.
Terry McAuliffe, the campaign chairman for Mrs. Clinton, said it was time to get her contributors “fired up for the general election.” There was no time, he said, to look back.
“It was a great race. She got 18 million votes and she realizes what was accomplished,” Mr. McAuliffe said in an interview. “No one likes to lose, but you know what? She’s moved on.”

Italy referee to officiate Euro 2008 final
Referees for the upcoming EURO 2008 soccer championships (1st row L to R) Konrad Plautz from Austria, Frank de Bleeckere from Belgium, Howard Webb from England, Manuel Enrique Mejuto Gonzalez from Spain, Herbert Fandel from Germany, Kyros Vassaras from Greece and (2nd row L to R) Roberto Rosetti from Italy, Pieter Vink from the Netherlands, Tom Henning Ovrebo from Norway, Lubos Michel from Slovakia, Peter Frojdfeldt from Sweden and Massimo Busacca from Switzerland pose for photographers during a workshop in Regensdorf near Zurich June 5, 2008. (Xinhua/Reuters Photo)VIENNA, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Italian referee Roberto Rosetti will officiate Sunday's Euro 2008 final at Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, UEFA said on Monday.
Rosetti, a 40-year-old hospital manager from Turin, came out the final referee, as well as the first match's referee of the tournament, after the team of his country being knocked out of the tournament.
Italy has suffered a quarterfinal exit on a 4-2 penalty shootout last Sunday after the score was deadlocked at 0-0 after 120 minutes.
The disappointing result, however, meant that Rosetti was eligible to handle the final, as only those whose teams are not taking part can referee.
"First of all, I'm a supporter of the national team as I have been since I was a little boy. The penalty shootout was a very emotional moment and not very nice for the team," said Rosetti.
"But I was in the opposite situation two years ago when Italy went on to win the World Cup. Of course, it's a great honor for me and a very important day in my life.
"I am a referee and so the final of the European Championship is a wonderful situation," added Rosetti, who was a last-minute replacement at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and took charge of four matches including France's 3-1 victory over Spain in the last 16.
Rosetti also officiated co-hosts Switzerland's tournament opener against the Czech Republic on June 7, when the Swiss lost 1-0 in Group A.
The other two matches he refereed were Russia's 1-0 victory against Greece and the second quarterfinal won on penalties by Turkey over Croatia after their thrilling game finished 1-1 after extra time.

Coaching changes are the talk of Euro 2008
Spain, Italy and Austria are the clubs in the middle of the discussions.
Spain wants Coach Luis Aragones to stay, but Aragones wants to leave.
Italy wants Coach Roberto Donadoni to leave, but Donadoni wants to stay.
Austria doesn't care what Coach Josef Hickersberger does, so Hickersberger has quit.
Coaches were all the news Monday, the first non-playing day in more than two weeks at soccer's European Championship. The tournament resumes with the semifinals Wednesday and Thursday.
The Spanish are one of the four remaining teams -- along with Russia, Turkey and Germany -- but their 69-year-old coach said that, win or lose, he would be stepping down after Sunday's final in Vienna.
"I thank all of those people who have addressed words of encouragement or compliments," Aragones said, "but . . . this adventure is ending for me, whatever happens to Spain here.
"We have created a great group with a great atmosphere. But I'm not going to get involved in whether they should offer me another contract or not. It is over and that is it."
For Donadoni, the picture is less clear. He had breakfast Monday with Giancarlo Abete, president of the Italian soccer federation, but revealed little of what was said.
Asked whether he would resign in the wake of Italy's elimination Sunday, Donadoni rejected the idea.
"Resign? The thought would never even enter the antechamber of my brain," the 44-year-old coach said.
"It's not because of a missed penalty that I'm going to change my opinion of our European Championship, that would be stupid," he said, referring to Italy's ouster by Spain on penalty kicks.
"With respect to those who should decide, I'm not going to try to sway them. My record speaks for itself. I'm not going to try to talk it up."
Hickersberger, meanwhile, made a preemptive strike, stepping down on the day before his fate was to be decided by the Austrian soccer federation.
"I am stopping. . . . I feel empty and tired. I need to take a break and recharge the batteries," he told Austria's Der Standard newspaper. "The chapter is closed. My mission has been accomplished. I have reflected long and hard."
Always good for a quote, Hickersberger, 60, then delivered one of the best of the tournament in a broadside at referees. "They treat us like circus bears," he said. "I don't want to be a circus bear anymore."
Austria, the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, failed to win a game, and Hickersberger, along with Germany Coach Joachim "Jogi" Loew were ejected from the Austria-Germany game for arguing with the fourth official.
In one other development Monday, Italian referee Roberto Rosetti was selected to take charge of Sunday's final.

Euro 2008: Guus Hiddink's qualified success puts Holland next in Russia's path
By John LeySource: Telegraph.co.uk
Good to talk: Guus Hiddink instructs his Russia squad.
Take Jose Mourinho, add age and vast experience, and you get Guus Hiddink. At 61, he is 16 years the senior of the Special One and comes with all the confidence, wit and cheek of Mourinho. Then again, it is hard to imagine Mourinho driving through the countryside on a Harley-Davidson in the manner Hiddink likes to relax.
On Wednesday, Hiddink maintained his outstanding record of taking national teams out of the qualifying group to lead Russia into the quarter-finals of a major tournament for the first time. He did it with some considerable style, his team outplaying Sweden - who needed only a draw - with a delightful approach that served as a warning to the teams still here.
With a delicious piece of irony, it is his native Holland that stands between Russia and history. At the end of the Sweden game Moscow exploded, the 15,000 Russians inside the Tivoli Neu Stadium could not contain their delight and neither could the players. But Hiddink stood calmly on the touchline and turned to his coaching staff, urging them to keep a lid on their excitement.
The players in this squad and before have discovered he is not a man to mess with. During Euro 96, when in charge of Holland, Hiddink sent home Edgar Davids and more recently, he warned his top two strikers, Andrei Arshavin and Roman Pavlyuchenko, that they could both miss Euro 2008.
Regardless of the result tonight, Hiddink's future looks good. Asked if he could manage Sweden one day, he laughed, but his response will alert teams around the world. "We'll see what happens after this European championship."
He has agreed verbally to two more years with Russia and is paid handsomely, with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich contributing to his salary. But he ruled himself out of the running to replace Avram Grant at Stamford Bridge. "I'm enjoying my job right now," he said recently. "I get a lot of positive energy working with young people, teaching them a few things. It's a big motivation for me to keep going."
And, on his ability to motivate the Russians, he added: "I demand a response. I don't want to sound cocky, but if you want to play at international level, then the demands I lay down means you can go one of two ways: either fly, or fight. That's the choice we offered. They chose to fight."
As Marco van Basten's side may discover in tonight's game, such a warning, probably also uttered to the Dutch more than a decade ago, could return to haunt them.
Oil fuels inflation to 11.05 per cent
Expect more monetary, fiscal measures, says FM.
Companies and consumers can expect another round of monetary tightening and administrative measures as headline inflation based on the wholesale price index crossed double digits to touch 11.05 per cent for the week ended June 7, the highest since May 6, 1995.
The inflation numbers spooked the stock markets, with the benchmark Sensitive Index dropping to its lowest in almost 10 months. The Sensex fell 516.70 points, or 3.4 per cent, to 14,571.29, its lowest since August 24. All but one stock in the index fell.
The 13-year high beat all analysts' — and the government's — expectations by almost 100 basis points and reflected the impact of the June 4 increase in auto and cooking fuels.
Petrol prices were raised by Rs 5 per litre, diesel by Rs 3 per litre and LPG by Rs 50 per cylinder after the basket of crude oil that Indian refineries buy touched $125 per barrel.
The inflation rate stood at 8.75 per cent in the previous week and 4.28 per cent in the corresponding week the previous year.
"Ninety-four per cent of the weekly jump is on account of fuel," Finance Minister P Chidambaram said in a brief statement outside his North Block office this afternoon.
"Inflation for the current week also captured rupee depreciation making imports dearer," said Dharmakirti Joshi, principal economist, Crisil.
"This is indeed a very difficult time," Chidambaram said, adding: "We will have to look at stronger measures on the demand side and the monetary side."
The government has already taken several fiscal and administrative measures like banning the export of some food items and cement, cutting import duties, banning futures trading in some items, and reducing customs and excise on petroleum products to curb the price rise.
Analysts and companies expect the inflation rate to stay above 10 per cent in the weeks ahead as the fuel price rise works its way through the system.
"The inflation rate will be around 11.45 per cent next week," said Saugata Bhattacharya, vice-president, economic research, Axis Bank, attributing the rise to an increase in private transport prices that will push up fruit and vegetable rates.
"Even by December the inflation rate will remain close to 10 per cent. It will decline only by January or February, but not below 9 per cent," he added.
"The wholesale price index does not look like coming down unless there is a very sharp correction in crude oil and commodity prices," Joshi added.
Meanwhile, with the inflation rate consistently above the Reserve Bank of India's comfort level of 5 to 5.5 per cent since February (see chart), bankers and economists expect the central bank to raise the cash reserve ratio (CRR), the proportion of deposits the central banks require banks to keep with it, 25 to 50 basis points.
While most public sector banks indicated they would not revise interest rates immediately, the country's second-largest private sector bank, HDFC Bank, raised its prime lending rate 25 basis points to 15.25 per cent.
Last week, the RBI raised the repo rate 25 basis points to 8 per cent, the highest in 5½ years.
The repo rate was raised for the first time in more than a year in a bid to curb demand, which is widely seen as stoking inflation.
India Inc is worried. K V Kamath, who heads ICICI Bank, India's largest private bank and is president, Confederation of Indian Industry, said inflation was reaching the "concern zone".
"This is criminal... An interest rate rise is now imminent, which is a very worrying factor for the automobile industry. The situation is getting out of control," said Ajay Seth, chief financial officer of India's largest passenger carmaker, Maruti Suzuki.
Some corporate chiefs, however, remain upbeat. Keki Mistry, vice-chairman & managing director of HDFC, India's largest home mortgage institution, said the company would take a call on raising interest rates in a couple of weeks. But he does not see much of an impact on home loans even if the rates rise 50 basis points.
"For a Rs 15-lakh loan, the best rate to a customer, assuming the interest rate was 10.25 per cent, effectively results in an actual cost of 5.1 per cent to a borrower because of the tax concessions," he said. The average loan size for HDFC is Rs 14 lakh.
Adi Godrej, chairman of Godrej group, said: "Some inflation-sensitive sectors may be impacted but the overall fundamentals are strong. With the monsoons panning out well, growth should be strong this year."
With today's numbers, India has joined the ranks of a few other Asian economies with double-digit inflation like Vietnam (25 per cent), Indonesia (10.4 per cent). China's inflation has come down to 7.7 per cent in May but is expected to rise again with an 18 per cent increase in petrol and diesel prices Thursday.
However, these countries measure inflation in terms of their retail prices whereas headline inflation in India is based on wholesale prices. Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (CPI), one of the Left parties that support the government, demanded Chidambaram's dismissal, saying all his measures to control inflation have been a total failure.
"We want his immediate ouster," CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan told reporters in Raipur, Chhatisgarh.
President of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajnath Singh said, "The UPA rule will down in history only as an era of ‘golden failures'."
He said the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, which was in power from 1999 to 2004, "left behind a legacy of sound macro-economic indicators and an economy of surpluses".
"Using these indicators the United Progressive Alliance government should have unleashed a new age of heightened double digit growth. Instead it has pushed the country into an era of double-digit inflation," Singh said.

What is animation?
In Latin, ‘Anima’ means soul. Animation is all about giving soul to a character. It is about moving something which cannot move itself. Time and space play a critical role in animation.
The object of animation could be a 2D painting, a clay statue, a picture of a person/ animal/ thing – just about anything at all.
Animation simulates movement through a series of pictures that have objects in slightly different positions.
How does animation work?
A simple theory known as persistence of vision offers an explanation. The Greek astronomer Ptolemy discovered this principle back in 130 AD. If images are flashed before the eye at a speed of at least ten frames per second, the brain thinks it is seeing a single moving image. The number of Frames Per Second (or FPS) directly correlates to how smooth the movement appears. If the frame rate is too slow, the motion will look awkward and jerky. If the frame rate is too high, the motion will blur.
Animation techniques
2D cel animation
Also known as traditional animation, 2D animation involves the creation of a high volume of separate drawings that define a sequence. These drawings are then traced with ink onto transparent celluloid sheets called cel, which are scanned and painted using a special application software. These cels are layered on each other to create a sequence. The sequence is later edited to synchronise the audio and video content. This technique is widely used in creating characters for animations and cartoon programmes.
Did you know that a full-length feature film produced using cel animation often requires a million or more drawings to complete?
3D CGI animation
This technique makes extensive use of animation software programmes. 3D objects are constructed using curves or 2D geometric figures. Software programmes are used to modify the texture, light and colour of the object surface. Virtual cameras are used to zoom, focus, illuminate and resize the 3D objects. Important frames are developed to regulate the flow of intermediate frames. This technique is commonly used to create animation for television programmes, movies and online and console games.
3D motion capture animation
This process of creating 3D characters is similar to the 3D CGI animation technique; however, the techniques differ with respect to the time when the animation effects are introduced. To produce animation effects, sensors from a computer are attached physically to a human being.
These sensors help coordinate the real-time movements of the human actor with the movements of a computerised 3D character. This technique is widely used for low-resolution games, Internet characters, live TV performances and special effects for animated movies.

Marilyn Monroe's Items To Be Sold At Auction
Marilyn Monroe's most prized possessions will be sold at two separate auctions in the U.S on Monday. The late screen legend's clothing, furniture and private documents will be sold at Bonhams and Butterfields' auction in Los Angeles and Julien's Auctions in Las Vegas.
Experts believe the double bill is the most significant bonanza of Monroe memorabilia since Christie's New York sold off items from Monroe's estate in 1999, raising a whopping $13.5 million. And Darren Julien, head of Julien's Auctions, predicts the items will raise a lot of money.
He tells the New York Daily News, "She's the top. Elvis (Presley) is comparable, but there are some things of Marilyn's that just go over the top."

Oxford keen to get more Indian students
OXFORD: The University of Oxford on Monday expressed its keenness to enrol more students from India on its campuses. "We are keen to increase the number of students from India," said Chancellor Chris Patten. He was speaking at a conference on globalisation here which was attended by Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath.
The conference was jointly organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the Said Business School.
The university is conferring an honorary doctorate on Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia. Nath and other Indian delegates were ushered in the Nelson Mandela Lecture Hall amid Bhangra beats. "Oxford never understates its welcome," said Patten. "Oxford programmes offer the best exposure to Indian students. We want to build on this relationship," said FICCI Secretary General Amit Mitra.
Underlining India's importance as one of the fastest growing economies in the world and an influential player in the World Trade Organisation, Patten equated Nath with the US President Bush in terms of being hosted by the United Kingdom.
Fields like Business Administration, Civil Law, Development Studies, Financial Economics, Bio-Chemistry and Engineering Science are favourites with Indian students. About 54 of them have won various scholarships, including the Clarendon Fund and Rhodes Scholarships.

Fergie Concert Tickets
Singer Fergie watches the Boston Celtics play
Paul McCartney plays a free charity concert in Kiev
McCartney rocks KievTens of thousands of people braved thunderstorms Saturday night to see Paul McCartney perform a charity concert on Kiev's Independence Square.
The outdoor show, the first in Ukraine for the former Beatle, was billed as the biggest concert ever in the former Soviet republic. It was broadcast live on national television and on giant screens in five cities.
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili was among those in attendance.
The concert was free, but organizers asked for donations from businessmen and others to help buy diagnostic equipment for Ukraine's National Cancer Institute's children's department. More than 500 people have contributed a total of about $600,000, and donations were continuing to come in, organizers said.

Majority of B.C. students exceed expectations, exam results show
Results from provincial tests in reading, writing and math suggest that more than two-thirds of B.C. students in Grades 4 and 7 are meeting or exceeding educational expectations, Education Minister Shirley Bond said Friday.
"There is still more work to be done to ensure that all students meet these expectations," she said while releasing the 2008 results from the tests, known as the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA).
Girls continue to outperform boys in all subjects and non-aboriginal students do better than aboriginal students, the release says. More students participated in the FSA this year than last, despite a vigourous campaign by the B.C. Teachers' Federation (BCTF) encouraging parents to withdraw their students.
The union opposes the tests because teachers say they cause unnecessary stress for students and do not contribute to learning. As well, they don't like the tests because the Fraser Institute uses the results every year to rank elementary schools.
"While I am very encouraged that more students wrote the FSA this year, the results confirm what we have said all along - we have work to do," Bond says in the release. "The focus now is to work with districts to help individual students."
This year's tests were administered in February and individual results were sent to parents in March.
Results for individual schools and districts are available at www.bced.gov.bc.ca/reporting/achieve/fsa-bas.php

UNISWA results in three weeks
Students of the University of Swaziland can brace themselves for more suspense as it has been established that their final examination results will be out in three weeks' time.
Several concerned students have been calling this publication to establish the date for the release of their exam results at the country’s institution of higher learning.
UNISWA Registrar (Corporate Affairs) told the Weekend Observer that external examiners have already left the country after checking the examination papers.
“At the moment, faculty boards are meeting to discuss and make an assessment of the examination papers. Thereafter, Senate will meet and approve the results. This is going to happen next week, and it is only then that the results will be released. Students must rest assured; they will be informed of the date of the release of the results. We are still processing them,” said Gama.
Senate will meet for a day or two next week, which means the results will be out the following week.
The Registrar further disclosed that UNISWA students behaved very well during the May examinations as not even a single student was caught copying.
Said Gama: “We commend the good behaviour this time. No student was caught cheating in the May exams. However, two students were caught copying during the December examinations at the Mbabane Campus.”
After the release of the results, students who did not do well will have to take the supplementary examinations sometime in July.
The next academic year resumes on August 14, 2008.
It is not clear whether the university will reintroduce the infamous semesterisation programme next academic year.
In April, the Supreme Court of Appeal interdicted the university from implementing the semesterisation programme this current academic year after a protracted legal battle between the Student Representative Council (SRC) and the administration.
However, the Court Order does not restrict the institution from reintroducing the semesterisation programme next academic year.

College Admissions Go Online in Mumbai
Students seeking admission in first year junior college (and their parents) can breathe a sigh of relief. Now they will not have to go about visiting every college to get the admission forms, at least in Maharashtra.
The state government of Maharashtra has a launched a new website 'www.mumbaiapplication.com' that will offer online admission form submission facility for first year junior college across over 500 colleges that are affiliated to the University of Mumbai, reports IANS.
Students will have to create an account to get started with filling the admission applications online. The registration will include the personal details that are usually asked by the college, which will save the hassle of typing the details every time while filling the form. The system will auto-complete information in the application as you type.
In addition, if the student has passed SSC from Maharashtra Board this year, they will only need to submit their seat number of the SSC exam, after which their name, caste, and marks will be automatically picked up from the SSC results. For other boards, students will have to enter the data manually, as well as also upload scanned images of their marklists and school leaving certificates.
After registration, students can select the colleges of their choice and pay the application fees online itself. A online receipt of the payment made will be sent through email as well as on the mobile phone mentioned in the registration form.
However, those who still want to follow the traditional process can go ahead and follow the manual process of scurrying from one college to another followed by standing in queues for submission of their application forms.
